some quick googling has said a few things.

Firstly, have you updated your graphics driver? thats one of the things that appears to crop up.

I'm currently runing the latest nvidia drivers from the Debian repos, installed the Debian way
version 190.42-3.
RTCW multiplayer runs fine, witch is weird, all other games run fine like RTCW Enemy Territory, except for some sound issues
that were rapidly solved.
Older versions of the installer will also crash but with a "couldn't open the OpenGL subsystem" message.
I really don't want to install nvidia drivers from they're website, I like to keep my system the Debian way.
This signal 11 really sucks.... :(

I ran into this problem when I swapped my 6800GTS to 8800GT. Here is the explanation and solution.

The crash is caused by the large number of opengl extensions supported by your new super-powerful feature-rich video card. RtCW tries to print out the list of all these GL extensions. In my case the it was 4111 chars long, and apparently the static buffer used by vsprintf is only 4096 bytes long. Insufficient buffer overflows, trashes some other variables and causes crash.

To solve this you may try to force RtCW to stay quiet with the corresponding +set command, if you know it. I don't, not even sure if such a command exists.
The other way is to patch the binary, wolfsp.x86 (remember to back it up first!) The easiest way is to modify the format string. Seek for GL_EXTENSIONS: %s and replace % with space or any other character. Do not delete the symbol, or you may end up with damaged non-runnable code. My file, patch 1.14, has the required % at offset 0x0010cd1e.
This is it, now wolfsp doesn't gladden your eye with huge list of supported extensions, and instead lets you play.

In deed! It worked like a charm! :D
How did you ever come up with this solution?
Are you a programer? Any way, thank you so much for taking the time to post a solution an help a fellow Debian user.
I recently moved to amd64 and RtCW is working, except for the sound that fails to initialize with something like this:

Code: Select all

unable to open /dev/dsp
This is not a amd64 issue, it happens also on i386, the solution I found for this was to do:

Code: Select all

echo "wolfsp.x86 0 0 direct">/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
after this sound works ok.
