CD drive not found or available on boot up

#1 Post by PDA123 »

The internal CD drive on my machine isn't found or recognized at boot up. Once I'm at the desktop the CD drive works fine- see, it's sr0

Code: Select all

$ lsblk -a
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 232.9G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 231.9G 0 part /
├─sda2 8:2 0 1K 0 part
└─sda5 8:5 0 976M 0 part [SWAP]
sr0 11:0 1 137.5M 0 rom
The Bios settings doesn't list any cd drive.

I need to be able to boot from the cd drive when using Clonezilla.
How can this be fixed?

Thanks,

Peter

Does your computer have a MAKE and MODEL, or can you give us some basic specs?

Which BIOS does it have?

Are you trying to start it with a CD in it which you know certainly works?

It's a Dell Optiplex 330 (it was made in 2007) 64bit
The Bios is A11 (5/31/12)

Thanks

What happens when you...

Install the CD in the drive

Startup the computer

Rapidly tap F12 when you see the Dell logo

The machine asks which device to bootup from.
The only choice is a Sata drive (which is the SSD harddrive).

Does the BIOS list the CD-ROM as an Optical Drive?
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/39135 ... =88#manual --- and the next page

There is a BIOS A12 which overcame some difficulty with TEAC CD-ROMs

No, bios says, in effect, Optical Drive Not Present.

Oddly, once Debian starts booting up and just before reaching the login screen, the CD drive starts spinning and blinking...so somehow the CD drive is being recognized.

Debian says the cd drive is an ATAPI iHAS224 A.
