NVIDIA Legacy 340xx

#1 Post by herreradimas »

Debian Bullseye does not more support for NVIDIA Llegacy 340xx, https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers so I wonder if:

1. Can I install from drivers directly nvidia website? is supported for Kernel 5.10.0-8-amd64 for build it?
2. Anyone Knows about Nouveau new version for support this chips NVIDIA Legacy 340xx, the system go to sleep broken after resume...for xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.17-1

Thanks.

Debian cannot supply a package for the NVIDIA Legacy 340xx driver because Nvidia did not update this driver to work with more recent linux kernels: Nvidia dropped support for graphic cards working only with this driver.

Unfortunately, you can't (Nvidia driver has a "proprietary" core): none can do.

Graphic cards supported by nouveau are listed here [1]: what is your Nvidia graphic card ?

For the malfunction with system resume after suspend to RAM (STR) o suspend to disk (STR), a bug report (#989705) has been opened on the Debian Bug Tracking System [2] for old nvidia graphic cards: it could be useful if you update the bug report with a report generated with your installation.

HTH.

Hello Aki,

Thanks you for answers all my questions!!!!!

My graphic card is a NVIDIA Corporation GT218M [NVS 3100M]
[1] link
NVA8 (GT218) GeForce 8400 GS, ION 2, GeForce 205, 210, G 210M, 305M, 310(M), 405
Quadro FX (380 LP, 380M), NVS (300, 2100M, 3100M)

System works fine with nouveau but just failure with suspend/resume system. I must have patient for next release kernel.

I will read about point 1 and 2 links.

Thanks!

Or spend a bit of money to get a used card that's supported by the drivers, yet not desirable to the currency miners.

It seems to be possible to install (and run without problems) the legacy 340 driver on Debian 11.

Some people have reported to been able to do it on the more recent versions of Ubuntu.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1908278

And, on the previous bug reporting thread, a PPA is mentioned, that was created to provide modified packages for the newer 5.1x kernels.

https://launchpad.net/~kelebek333/+arch ... dia-legacy

So, it seems to be a simple question of adapting these procedures for Debian 11.

(I've been using the nouveau driver with my GT218 [GeForce 210] graphics card, and I have some minor issues with it - on 2D performance alone... So, the proprietary driver continues to be the better option...)
I just *love* the stability, much more bug-free nature, and modular installation options of Debian. Apart from the unfortunate adoption of "systemd" (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=129881&start=165#p671030) this distribution is *great*.

There is no legacy 340 driver in Debian 11 and there isn't going to be. It is out of support by Nvidia and has security issues that aren't going to ever get fixed. However, there is a version in Sid that is periodically getting backported to match each new kernel, and you can install it fairly easily into Bullseye. Much easier than messing with PPAs anyway. You will probably need to temporarily (or permanently if you want to mess with pinning) add Sid to your repos. Downloading the debs directly would be a pain because there are a lot of related packages that need to be pulled in. Watch carefully that you don't upgrade anything unexpected along the way, could make your life very difficult. The installed apt-get packages should be about 120MB.

Trying to compile the driver straight from Nvidia is not going to be easy because it only works up to kernel 5.4. The version in Sid is currently patched up to kernel 5.11. Incidentally it has been backported to Buster (Debian 10). This situation should continue until either it becomes impractical to patch for a new kernel or the xserver API is bumped and is no longer compatible.

This method fixed the suspend issue for me on Bullseye with a Geforce 320M:

https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/ ... 00281.html

So happy to have that sorted! :)

You can install "nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver" packages from "Debian Sid".

They have patched driver and it builds with kernel "5.10" in bullseye.
