Nvidia drivers on Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast random freezing

#1 Post by craigwilliamsonnz »

Hi there. I've recently installed Bullseye (from stable) on my Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast and I'm getting random hard locks with the NVIDIA 460.91.03 drivers. The main display is driven by the mini display port and I have a second display running off the HDMI port via an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. I can't find anything online to say that this combination is an issue so has anyone else had similar hard locks when using the NVIDIA drivers? I've also noticed similar hard locks when using the Nouveau drivers as well. I don't have any issues when running the same configuration under Windows. When I freshly installed Bullseye using the officially released ISOs the drivers defaulted to the llvmpipe driver so could that have something to do with the issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much and good luck.

If it is defaulting to llvmpipe driver it means it is rendering in software mode, and that would explain your freezes. How did you install NVIDIA drivers? Did you follow wiki?

Thanks very much for the response. I installed the NVIDIA drivers by following the Debian wiki. I didn't seem to have any issues when using the llvmpipe driver so it could be an NVIDIA issue. Hope that helps. Thanks again.

@craigwilliamsonnz:
Did you try to copy system logs soon after a freeze (for example, by ssh) before rebooting to collect more technical information to share here for further analysis or to open a bug report on the Debian Bug Tracking System for the specific debian package ?

Hi Aki. Sorry for the late reply. The PC was working ok for a bit then it crashed again. I managed to get the Xorg logs off the PC after it crashed so hopefully it will help you. Let me know if you need anything else.

Re: Nvidia drivers on Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast random freezing

#7 Post by Aki »

Hello,

The Intel® NUC 11 Enthusiast Mini PC (NUC11PHKi7CAA) looks like a complex and powerful computer, indeed. Its specifications [1] show it is equipped with two graphic adapters:
a) Intel TigerLake GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] (integrated in the CPU): PCI: (0@0:2:0) 8086:9a49
b) Nvidia TU106M [GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile] (discrete): PCI:*(1@0:0:0) 10de:1f15

Have you disabled the Iris Xe Graphic Card by BIOS ?

Both graphic cards are recognized by Xorg server (as reported in logs of your previous messages), but only the GeForce RTX 2060 is initialized by the the Xorg server:

Code: Select all

[  1224.729] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
[  1224.730] (II) systemd-logind: got fd for /dev/dri/card0 226:0 fd 15 paused 0
[  1224.730] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card1)
[  1224.730] (II) systemd-logind: got fd for /dev/dri/card1 226:1 fd 16 paused 0
[  1224.732] (--) PCI: (0@0:2:0) 8086:9a49:8086:2090 rev 1, Mem @ 0x6053000000/16777216, 0x4000000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x00004000/64
[  1224.732] (--) PCI:*(1@0:0:0) 10de:1f15:8086:2090 rev 161, Mem @ 0x6b000000/16777216, 0x6040000000/268435456, 0x6050000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x00003000/128, BIOS @ 0x????????/524288
The Xorg server initializes the Nvidia graphic card with the following priority for driver (kernel module) selection:

Code: Select all

[     6.463] (==) Matched nvidia as autoconfigured driver 0
[     6.463] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 1
[     6.463] (==) Matched nv as autoconfigured driver 2
[     6.463] (==) Matched modesetting as autoconfigured driver 3
[     6.463] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 4
[     6.463] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 5
In Debian it was used to configure the Debian/Linux operating system to disable the loading of the nouveau kernel module (see [2]) when the nvidia proprietary driver was used: this seems not to be happened in you case. It is difficult to assert if this is the cause of the lockups you have reported, but it would be useful to give it a try (see [3]).

Lastly, it would be useful to see a full system log of the specific session in which the lockup occurred to spot evidences of other possible causes (for example, error messages from the kernel). For example, if the lockup occurred in the previous session (not the current one), you can issue the following command as user root:

Code: Select all

journalctl --no-pager -b -1 > journalctl.log
The file journalctl.log will contain a more detailed system log that you can share with ore users (for example, compressing it and sent as attachment to a following message) or you can analyze it by yourself.

Hi Aki,

Thanks very much for getting back to me. I wasn't able to get the logs from the time it crashed to getting the Xorg logs but here is the logs from the last time it crashed. Note it isn't everything due to the character limits. Let me know if you need anything else.

Re: Nvidia drivers on Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast random freezing

#9 Post by craigwilliamsonnz »

Hi there,

I have switched over to the Nouveau driver for now and that seems to be far more stable than the official Nvidia drivers. I'll see if I can get more information about what is going on with the Nvidia drivers online. I did get one kernel crash using the Nouveau drivers when trying to use Google Chrome but it may be unrelated:

Re: Nvidia drivers on Intel NUC 11 Enthusiast random freezing

#10 Post by craigwilliamsonnz »

Hi all,

I think I've resolved the issue with the Nvidia drivers. I did some searching and found that other people have had a similar issue with AMD processors. Their issue was to do with power management in the BIOS. What they did was to basically disable power management and that fixed their problems. So I tried the same thing with the Intel NUC and that has made the Nvidia drivers run much better. I haven't had a hard crash since I did that. I'll leave this ticket open for a few days and see if it fails again. But so far so good. If you have any questions let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thanks everyone for your help. It was greatly appreciated.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for posting, I am experiencing the same issue. Can you post your explicit BIOS settings concerning the power management?

Hi Martijn,

Sorry for the late reply. What I did in the BIOS was the following:

1. Go to Power tab.
2. Enable the 'Max Performance Enabled' setting i.e. tick the checkbox
3. Set the 'Intel Dynamic Power Technology' to Off.

I didn't change any other setting but if those don't work for you let me know and I'll list my secondary power settings. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Hi Craig,
I have the exact same issue on Linux Mint and it's driving me crazy (I had to reset the power on the NUC about 30 times just yesterday!)

Can you please post your secondary power settings since the primary ones you recommended didn't work for me ?

Thanks in advance,

Have a great day,

Hi there,

Apologies for the late reply. My secondary power settings are as follows:

Power Sense = ticked
After Power Failure = Stay Off
Deep S4/S5 = unticked
Wake on LAN from S4/S5 = Power On - Normal Boot
Wake System from S5 = unticked
USB S4/S5 Power = unticked
Wake from Thunderbolt device = unticked
PCIe APSM support = unticked
Native ACPI or PCIe support = ticked

Hopefully that helps you. If it doesn't let me know and I can tell you what type of RAM/HDD I've got installed in case it could be something to do with those. Good luck.
