This is from an old laptop on boot. Nothing useful, just strange lines.

Sometimes it works well enough to reach the desktop, but with the lines slightly visible.
What could be causing this?`Loose cable? Something wrong with the screen itself?

Re: Weird lines on the screen
Pretty sure it's dead. Could be a loose connector or something. Open it up, wiggle stuff, clean connectors with contact cleaner.
Can you plug it in to an external monitor to ascertain if it is only the screen?

Re: Weird lines on the screen [solved]
I'll try opening it up, then.
It only has a mini display port, and I don't have an adapter... The screen changes when I type in my password, and the fan runs a little, indicating that it boots like it should.
Edit: Nope, that didn't help. I am sending it to the landfill.

Sounds likely it's the screen then.
Surely you have electronics recycling in your country.Edit: Nope, that didn't help. I am sending it to the landfill.

Finding the right words in English isn't always easy. Yes, it is sort of a recycling station where you sort different types of waste. This includes different types of electronic equipment. I imagine they have a basket for laptops.
