Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
Probably depends where you are. I can recommend the Brother HL-1212W: it's well made, comes with a full toner cartridge, not a half-full one, and the driver is now in the Debian Brother drivers package, so you don't need to install anything. I got one for £50, but deals here at the moment are for the printer plus four toner cartridges (five in all) for £180 in the same shop. A good deal* for someone who does a lot of printing, but it would take you 400 years to finish the cartridges.
Look for deals on budget printers where you are, then check here if anybody uses them and can tell you if they work well.
Edit: *Actually not as good a deal as the £160 they were doing it for a month ago.

Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
I've always had rather good experience with HP printers. Most will work with the hplip driver supplied by Debian which even downloads proprietary blobs automatically if you need them.

Any Modern printer is compatible with Debian. Choose. Sit back. Relax.

Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
Any Modern HP printer does not require HPLIP. Users will eventually catch on.
Debian automatically downloading proprietary blobs is complete and utter nonsense. How did an idea like that enter your head?

Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
Define "modern": that's the problem.
It does not mean "on sale in the shops today".
Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
Not a problem at all ; it's dead easy. Any printer that provides AirPrint is Modern. CUPS is centred around dealing with them now and in the future. Non-AirPrint is Legacy and in the past; CUPS will refuse to deal with them.
There are printers on sale now that do not have an AirPrint service? Maybe one or two. Please instance one.It does not mean "on sale in the shops today".

Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
HPLIP GUI does download proprietary blobs for the few of their printers that need it. That's the case for my model. I've never said that Debian does that.
Cf.
"Installation flows for Discrete drivers will take care of installing proprietary plug-ins as required."

Re: recommend monochrome laser printer for home
From the perspective of 'over the years' experience I have a tendency to lean toward Brother or HP for printers. Epson is a bit of a question mark. Canon I generally recommend not getting.
In terms of what is available today, I am not up on the current models, so can't give specific recommendations.
