[problem] USB ports not working anymore after update to bullseye

#1 Post by outofcontrol »

Hi all,

I have a very strange problem after updating to bullsyeye.
The update went smoothly as the last two machines I updated...
Only surprise was after reboot an error message saying "the connection to the UPS was lost".

Therefore I decided to check on the UPS to see if something is wrong, but instead I noticed none of the USB devises was working.
Not only the UPS but also neither mouse nor keyboard.
Firstly just wondering I decided to install the actual kernel not staying on 4.19.
But still the same. Nothing is working. I even tried the newest backports kernel...also not working...

uname -r
5.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64

During boot, also in the grub menu the keyboard is working. Only once the system is booted it's not working anymore.
After 2 days of trying all bios settings, updating to the newest bios I completely puzzled.

The mainboard is a supermicro X11SSH-F.

dmesg is show a continuous connecting/disconnecting of the USB devices:

Could be the same issue as here?

https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=234311

(Same vendor/device, repeated connection/disconnection).

Check driver in use in ups.conf if it exists.

Hi @@FreewheelinFrank
Thanks for suggesting this...unfortunately it's not the same issue and even got worse...
I figured in the meantime out, no USB device at all is working.
No keyboard or mouse or anything was recognized...
After searching for solutions I meanwhile figured out, I could get the keyboard and mouse to work.
How...?? I wrote a script which is automatically loading some USB modules at startup which I thought could be useful...
<<
#!/bin/bash

/sbin/modprobe hid
/sbin/modprobe usbcore
/sbin/modprobe usb-storage
/sbin/modprobe uas
/sbin/modprobe usbhid
/sbin/modprobe hid_generic
/sbin/modprobe i2c_hid
/sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd
/sbin/modprobe ohci-hcd
/sbin/modprobe xhci-hcd
>>

Of course only a temporary fix unless I could figure out more...

Nevertheless the behavior changed dramatically...
Now it's not continuously connecting and disconnecting the UPS or the USB drive...but they're also not working. (why only keyboard and mouse???)

Here an example of dmesg when different USB devices are connected...

What are outputs of

Code: Select all

$ lspci | grep USB
and the following with and without running the script

Code: Select all

$ lsmod | grep usb
?

(Note: case sensitive.)

Are there any USB settings in the BIOS? If so, what are they? (May be EHCI or xHCI.)

I'd boot live media and see if everything works normally, just to determine if the problem is with your install or something is going on with your hardware.
