Upgrade from Jessie to Buster now can't set video mode.

#1 Post by dfatdf »

Hello,

I needed to move this Dell Alienware X51 system from Jessie to Buster (to match another system that does special builds and it can't go past Buster at this time). The first process from Jessie to Stretch seemed to work for the most part but I had to uninstall and reinstall KDDM for the GUI to come up (during the upgrade it complained about kdm being in use).

Next, I upgraded to Buster. That process said the Nvidia driver doesn't support the video card anymore and I should use the Nouveau driver. But it kept failing the nvidia legacy check so I had to just tell it to use Nvidia. After booting, no X being started and can't start. So finding anything I can, one thing I do is remove all Nvidia drivers, still won't work as autodetect said it would use nv and not the nouveau, basically I gave up and found instructions on installing Nvidia driver. So I installed nvidia-detect which shows:

Code: Select all

Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GT 545 OEM] [10de:1241] (rev a1)

Checking card: NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GT 545 OEM] (rev a1)
Your card is only supported up to the 390 legacy drivers series.
It is recommended to install the
    nvidia-legacy-390xx-driver
package.
So I installed that: apt-get install nvidia-legacy-390xx-driver

Rebooted and now X comes up but I knew something was off when the cursor arrow was HUGE. I went in to settings but they are stuck at 800x600. Looking online I found something about xrandr which outputs:

Code: Select all

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected primary 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600 75.00*
More Info. The xorg.conf file has:

Code: Select all

Section "Module"
    Load	"glx"
EndSection
Although I tried with removing xorg.conf all together and didn't matter.

I then put back what was there back in Jessie which was:

Code: Select all

Section "Module"
    Load	"glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier	"Video Card"
    Driver	"nvidia"
EndSection
But then X wouldn't even start.

When you're in the display settings in KDE it just says "default" for the monitor, it doesn't give the name or anything and there is no offer of different video modes.

So I'm stuck. I got as far as knowing I have to use that Nvidia 390 legacy driver for X to work at all.

BTW, if I run `X -configure` it wont' work, says something about fbdev can't be used and the list of video drivers doesn't include Nvidia. If I run nvidia-xconfig it changes xorg.conf to contain a bunch of items, but then X won't start again.

On startup there is one failed message about the Nvidia Persistent Daemon but not sure if that has anything to do with resolution:

Code: Select all

Here's the latest log after boot that starts the 800x600 mode:

Solved:

switch to console login then:

apt-get --purge uninstall nvidia*
apt autoremove

run the 390 installer from the Nvidia site.

If I understood you right you've managed to install nvidia-drivers at alienware X51?
Could you give a hint or short FAQ how to install it at such machine?
I'm in posess of Alienware X51 R2 with updated BIOS - A12.
Buster runs at my machine for last 3 years at least but I got no further than getting stuck at command line after installing nvidia drivers which can be seen from here.
