Headphone mic detected but no sound

#1 Post by atlas1155 »

Hello everyone, I'm very new to Linux and I've been having audio problems pretty much since day 1, I started out with Ubuntu but was stuck on 'Dummy Output', tried Open SUSE and Mint briefly before settling on Debian (11). My headphone jack still results in 'Dummy Output' but I have bought an AUX to USB adapter. This way I get sound output, and my laptop recognizes the microphone but it doesn't get any input. At this point I've tried every solution I could find online and I am very close to switching back to Windows.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Make and model of laptop would be helpful please.

Try

Code: Select all

$ alsamixer
and F4. Check that the microphone is not muted (MM at bottom).

Also post output of

Code: Select all

$ arecord -l

Thanks for output of inxi -Fx: it includes the make and model and also details of audio hardware - I shall have to remember that.

Audio devices (not including webcam) are

Code: Select all

Device-1: Intel Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
  v: kernel bus ID: 00:1f.3
Device-2: Realtek Realtek USB2.0 Audio type: USB
  driver: hid-generic,snd-usb-audio,usbhid bus ID: 3-3:2
Alsa only sees the USB device: is that plugged in on an second internal sound card?

With Tiger Lake I think you will need the SOF driver:
SOF is available on Intel PCI devices starting with Gemini Lake, and has since been the only solution provided by Intel for the following platforms: Comet Lake, Ice Lake, and Tiger Lake.
https://thesofproject.github.io/latest/ ... ction.html

Do you have

Code: Select all

firmware-sof-signed
installed?

If you don't, install it then post output of

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep 'firmware\|sof\|audio\|snd'
to check for any errors.

The USB device is just plugged to a USB port regularly.

I have installed the SOF driver, it has not fixed the problem.

Code: Select all

 # dmesg | grep 'firmware\|sof\|audio\|snd'
does not return anything, does that mean I've failed the installation?

It probably means you pasted the command into the terminal and did

Code: Select all

$ # dmesg | grep 'firmware\|sof\|audio\|snd'
Which means the command is commented out and does nothing. (Done it myself.)

Make sure you get the root prompt (#) and enter the command

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep 'firmware\|sof\|audio\|snd'
To get root

Code: Select all

$ su -
and enter root password.

Did you reboot after installing the SOF firmware?

Yes I did reboot after installing.

I managed to run the command and received this in return:

You have some missing firmware. You can install and run isenkram to find some of it.

Code: Select all

# apt install isenkram-cli
# isenkram-autoinstall-firmware

Code: Select all

i915/tgl_dmc_ver2_08.bin
is Tiger Lake firmware but not in Bullseye.

It is in

Code: Select all

firmware-misc-nonfree
in Sid - you can download and use that package (manual install).

https://packages.debian.org/sid/firmware-misc-nonfree

None of the above affects sound, AFAIK.

Code: Select all

Applying patch firmware 'hda-jack-retask.fw'
What patch have you applied with hdajackretask?

I think one of the solutions I tried had something to do with the hdajackretask patch, I'm really new to this stuff so I was trying stuff from understanding if I have to admit, how would I access that to check I have no idea.

I still get no input from my mic even with the new firmware.

Re: Headphone mic detected but no sound

You need to run isenkram:

Code: Select all

# isenkram-autoinstall-firmware
It will add firmware for wifi and Bluetooth, not sound, so it will not get the headphones working, but I expect wifi and Bluetooth are things you will want at some point anyway.

Can you remove the hdajackretask patch with the Restore Boot Default button please and do dmesg again because I have not idea what changes it is making and need to see the output without hdajackretask changing things.

I had already ran isenkram, I did again just in case and it :

Code: Select all

info: No new firmware package with requested firmware detected.
This is my dmesg output after fixing my hdajackretask:

Code: Select all

Sorry, my bad. I was looking on my phone and only saw half the output.

Do you have the package

Code: Select all

alsa-ucm-conf
installed?

Yes, I do.

Code: Select all

alsa-ucm-conf is already the newest version (1.2.4-2).

Are there any DSP configuration settings in the BIOS? Is it enabled?

You could try forcing the SOF driver.

Create a file

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
and add

Code: Select all

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=3
Reboot and post dmesg output with SOF forced.

Try disabling DMIC with

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
in the same file (with and without the previous entry.

If all that fails, all I can suggest is upgrading to the latest kernel from backports, because SOF support has improved with later kernels than the one in Bullseye.

One more option is to force the legacy driver using the following:

Code: Select all

snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=1
This will disable the internal digital microphone if you have one.

This seems to have worked for another member with the same sound card, so perhaps try this first,
