Headphone mic detected but no sound
Headphone mic detected but no sound
Hello everyone, I'm very new to Linux and I've been having audio problems pretty much since day 1, I started out with Ubuntu but was stuck on 'Dummy Output', tried Open SUSE and Mint briefly before settling on Debian (11). My headphone jack still results in 'Dummy Output' but I have bought an AUX to USB adapter. This way I get sound output, and my laptop recognizes the microphone but it doesn't get any input. At this point I've tried every solution I could find online and I am very close to switching back to Windows.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for output of inxi -Fx: it includes the make and model and also details of audio hardware - I shall have to remember that.

Alsa only sees the USB device: is that plugged in on an second internal sound card?
With Tiger Lake I think you will need the SOF driver:

installed?

The USB device is just plugged to a USB port regularly.
I have installed the SOF driver, it has not fixed the problem.
does not return anything, does that mean I've failed the installation?

Re: Headphone mic detected but no sound
You have some missing firmware. You can install and run isenkram to find some of it.
is Tiger Lake firmware but not in Bullseye.
It is in
in Sid - you can download and use that package (manual install).
https://packages.debian.org/sid/firmware-misc-nonfree
None of the above affects sound, AFAIK.
What patch have you applied with hdajackretask?
Code: Select all
# apt install isenkram-cli
# isenkram-autoinstall-firmware
Code: Select all
i915/tgl_dmc_ver2_08.bin
It is in
Code: Select all
firmware-misc-nonfree

Re: Headphone mic detected but no sound
You need to run isenkram:
It will add firmware for wifi and Bluetooth, not sound, so it will not get the headphones working, but I expect wifi and Bluetooth are things you will want at some point anyway.
Can you remove the hdajackretask patch with the Restore Boot Default button please and do dmesg again because I have not idea what changes it is making and need to see the output without hdajackretask changing things.
Code: Select all
# isenkram-autoinstall-firmware
Can you remove the hdajackretask patch with the Restore Boot Default button please and do dmesg again because I have not idea what changes it is making and need to see the output without hdajackretask changing things.

I had already ran isenkram, I did again just in case and it :
This is my dmesg output after fixing my hdajackretask:

Re: Headphone mic detected but no sound
Sorry, my bad. I was looking on my phone and only saw half the output.
Do you have the package
Code: Select all
alsa-ucm-conf
Re: Headphone mic detected but no sound
Yes, I do.
Code: Select all
alsa-ucm-conf is already the newest version (1.2.4-2).

You could try forcing the SOF driver.
Create a file
Code: Select all
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
Code: Select all
options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=3
Try disabling DMIC with
Code: Select all
options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0
If all that fails, all I can suggest is upgrading to the latest kernel from backports, because SOF support has improved with later kernels than the one in Bullseye.

Re: Headphone mic detected but no sound
One more option is to force the legacy driver using the following:
This will disable the internal digital microphone if you have one.
This seems to have worked for another member with the same sound card, so perhaps try this first,
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=152860&p=759488&hi ... er#p759488
Code: Select all
snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=1
