Hello,
I installed Debian Squeeze on my Dell Precision M6600 notebook but am having trouble setting the resolution to the native screen resolution. I am stuck at 1152x864 although the screen can handle 16??x???.
My graphics card is the ATi FirePro M8900:
http://www.amd.com/us/products/workstat ... tures.aspx
What I tried:
System->Preference->Monitors: Only gives me the max. option of 1152x864 which is already set. This gui also shows me that the monitor is not recognized.
Reading through
http://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo
lspci -v | grep VGA
returns:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 6720 (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
So I assume that the driver is not properly installed. However, according to
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/xser ... -video-ati
the FireGL and FirePro cards should be covered by the free linux ati driver, which I have checked is already installed (xserver-xorg-video-ati via package manager).
I also tried to install the proprietary drivers via:
aptitude -r install linux-headers-2.6-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') fglrx-control fglrx-driver
but am getting the error:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libfglrx-amdxvba1: PreDepends: multiarch-support which is a virtual package.
libgl1-fglrx-glx: Depends: glx-alternative-fglrx (>= 0.2) which is a virtual package.
PreDepends: multiarch-support which is a virtual package.
libfglrx: PreDepends: multiarch-support which is a virtual package.
fglrx-driver: Depends: glx-alternative-fglrx (>= 0.2) which is a virtual package.
fglrx-control: Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.9.0) but 2.8.0-2.1 is installed.
I could not find anyone having the same issue. I assume, according to post like
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1775322
that the open drivers should work for me (on linux for my graphics card).
Could someone please provide me with further steps to try? Thank you.

What's in your sources.list? Are you mixing stable and testing repositories at all?
