Printer Brother HL-2270DW problems

#1 Post by ckosloff »

Cups finds this printer as available and installs it .
Problem is that CUPS does not have the exact driver for it, and the printer fails with message "unable to locate printer"
Tried to find proper PPD in Brother's site but not there, openprinting.org has closed its Brother forum, so at a loss of what to do.

I have the same printer, great little laser printer :)

I have great results with the driver for Brother HL-2140 Foomatic/pxlmono.

then go into preferences/properties for the driver (I use system-config-printer), print options, then select:

Print Quality: Draft
Economy Mode: On

click apply and you are good to go, those settings will save some toner and the printing is still crisp and clear.

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hl ... ifications

From the above link:
General
Black Print Speed (max. ppm) 27ppm Black
CPU (Processor) Speed 200 MHz
Duplex Printing Capability Yes
Emulation(s) GDI, PCL6
First Time to Print Less than 8.5 sec.
LCD Display No
Max. Monthly Duty Cycle‡ 10,000 pages
Optional Memory (MB) No
Print Resolution (max dpi) Up to 2400 x 600 dpi
Print Technology B/W Laser Technology
Printer Driver Compatibility† Windows® Mac OS® & Linux
Recommended Monthly Print Volume‡ 250 to 2,000 pages
Standard Memory 32MB Memory
Toner Save Mode Yes

The key is PCL6 compatibility The pxlmono driver, found in the ghostscript package, is the core of PCL6 compatibility. The ljet4 driver will also work albeit at no more than 600x600dpi..
The GDI driver is what Brother's web site provides. The GDI driver relies on a raster-converter that Brother compiled on an older Ubuntu/Debian x86 system - usually lib32 is necessary for function. The source code for the raster-converter has never been opensourced.

The plxmono driver will build x86_64 and not require any 32bit libs.
Using foomatic-db, you can generate an HL-2270 plxmono ppd and I did so for my neighbor. It supports 1200x1200dpi, duplex, a slew of paper/envelope sizes and both paper trays. The OpenPrinting website essentially uses foomatic to generate the ppd downloads. If you mistrust drivers from the internet, you can also build the ppd your self. Using foomatic, I previously built an HL-227DW ppd and can email it to you - PM me if you want to go this route.

Be sure ghostscript is installed and copy the ppd to /usr/share/cups/model/ . Configure cups per usual and the HL-2270DW driver should show up in the Brother list.

Hi fellow Debianers,
Thanks for all answers.
Forgot to mention that this printer is connected to a router via a switch.
i did mention that the error is "unable to locate printer".
This printer used to work fine, so I am inclined that there is some networking problem.
I am out of town at present, but as soon as I get back I will troubleshoot everything: router, switch, cable, connection, etc.
Also all software problems, according to your suggestions.
So see you all next week, have a wonderful weekend.
