Wifi connection unstable

#1 Post by dorcas_gustine »

Hello everyone,
I just moved from Buster to Bullseye updating the repos in sources.list / apt dist-upgrade / apt full-upgrade.
I don't know if it's the correct way to do that (I'm not very expertienced), but everything's seems to work just fine except for the wifi connection (eth connection works perfectly).
It seems that I can make small data exchange but nothing more.
Even with an apt update, the connection starts and, after a few seconds, it slows down and stops.
After it stops, sometimes I lost the connection, other times it starts to work (bad) again.

I've tried to:
disable ipv6 from /etc/sysctl.conf;
set country region with

Code: Select all

iw reg set
;
add

Code: Select all

options ath9k nohwcrypt=1 ps_enable=1 btcoex_enable=0
to /etc/modbrope.d/ath9k.conf.

Here are some system information
My machine is an Asus N550JK

uname -r

Maybe go over the logs again. It is very strange if it doesn't give you any clue:

Code: Select all

$ journalctl -b
I assume your router is working fine.

CTRL-EVENT-BEACON-LOSS
This looks like a weak signal. Do you have WiFi power savings enabled? Try to turn them off.

Does it also slow down when you are sitting next to the router?

You can try a live-cd/live-usb with a different distro and see if you get different results to isolate the problem.

Hello Hallvor,
after a few tries, I've tried to restore a snapshot made before moving from Buster to Bullseye but it didn't go well.
Luckily I had a root partition and a user partition, so I made a fresh installation of Bullseye on the root partition and now everything works fine.
Sorry if I wasted your time. Thank you very much for your patience.

Are you me? Just created an account for exactly the same issue!
I have the exact same laptop (asus N550JK) and after running Buster successfully for a while I've upgraded to Bullseye (update sources.list / apt dist-upgrade / apt full-upgrade). Using the same method you did. But I also have wifi issues: every couple of seconds my wifi drops & reconnects.

A fresh install is not something I'd like to do... so I'm still looking for a solution.

The only thing I can add is that my journalctl` is absolutely filled with the following logs:

Code: Select all

 An active wireless connection, in infrastructure mode, involves no access point?

Wifi connection is solid on all other devices (And used to be solid on this laptop as well, before the upgrade).
Any new ideas?

Hi kingtim,
honestly I thought I solved the problem with a fresh installation but I was wrong. After a more thorough test I realized that the problem persisted (yes, I got too excited and after a few seconds of working connection, I decided that the problem was solved).
As I said, I'm not very experienced with linux and, especially because I use the computer to work and I have wanted to try it for a long time, I switched to (I fear to say that on this forum) Manjaro.
Obviously, we're not talking about better or worst distros, but installing Manjaro solved this problem.
I sadly don't have enough know-how to understand why now my wi-fi is working fine, but now I have no problems whatsoever.

I hope someone more experienced will be able to provide you with the help you are looking for.

Well, at least i'm not crazy. In my frustration i tried a reinstall of debian, but no dice.

I'm in the same boat as you: Linux (whichever flavour) is a tool for me to run my apps: i'm not really the type of guy who really goes into the nitty-gritty of it all.

I've now installed Pop!_os (because: why not). That works fine. Still really curious what would be going wrong here. ah well.

Hi all,

I have exactly the same problem on my N551JM: the WiFi is really unstable and I have already tried also the fresh install method. My card is an Atheros AR9462.

The only workaround I found is to use the old kernel from Debian Buster (4.19) after installing it through pinning. Loading it gives magically the WiFi back. Is there maybe a way to understand how is this possible by comparing the two kernels?

This looks like a weak signal. Do you have WiFi power savings enabled? Try to turn them off.

Does it also slow down when you are sitting next to the router?

You can try a live-cd/live-usb with a different distro and see if you get different results to isolate the problem.
As suggested by Hallvor I tried to switch off the power saving option in the GNOME menu and it’s not possible. If I try it, it automatically switches off the WiFi card. If I activate it again, it activates also the WiFi card. They seem to be bounded together.

[edit] Of course they’re bounded, there is only the on/off button. My bad!

Hi all,

in the italian forum Debianizzati the user azioga found a solution to the problem. The answer in the forum is here.

The original source of the solution is in Arch Linux wiki here and the bug was already signaled here in the mailing list of the Debian kernel.

Step by step the solution is:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Change the default line

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_iommu=off"
Then run

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
and reboot the computer. The problem should be solved.

Happy new year to all of you!
