Forum search gives blank page.

#1 Post by geoffkaniuk »

I am running Mate 1.20.4 under Debian 10 Buster. Today I attempted to search in the forums. The search simply times out and delivers a blank page. I have tried several forums (including this one) and they all behave in the same way. I am logged in for these searches.

Any ideas?
Geoff

Search is working for me. Both by search keyword and author. Also using the Subsilver
Criteria used: keyword debian

Strange. If I search for "search" it works
If I search for "fstab" it fails

I agree there also. Using fstab as a key word search (leaving all bits set to the default) I too get a blank page

Weird. It seems some words aren't found. fstab is also a blank page for me.

So, is the blank page kind of a default for nothing found?

I do not believe so, the forums should respond with a "0" results found page like one of the screen captures above shows.

This is a blank empty page.

I did view html page and for a search it looks like this: You can skip it all, the input search in on line #61

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html dir="ltr" lang="en-gb">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8" />
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" />

Update:

Some PHP errors are suppressed by way of a blank page, looking into the server log it appears to be for searches over a set about of seconds. This may have been from one of the updates from 10 to 11. I will continue looking into it, may need to make a small change to a value.

LOL - I'm trying just about anything (gumby, skippy, poop) and searches are working quite well. Trying to hit a blank page (of course, I'm not being overly creative with criteria either)
But it seems like you are on to something, donald so I'll gracefully bow out

We are still planning for the update this weekend, viewtopic.php?f=12&t=152922.

During the update we can review the PHP stuff to see if the error is the forum software needing an update or if it was the server OS update.

Will still investigate in the meantime. Thank you all for the heads up.

Thanks all for your tests which seem to give mixed results. For the record I did not use any key words, am logged in, and have just tried searching for 'thunderbird problems' - getting a blank page. So I will go and post there as that started it all.

I mentioned that the trigger for this post was several issues in Thunderbird. It turns out that the issue was due to automatic changes in the theme, and I have now changed theme to resolve those. This also resolved the forum search failure issue. I have now tested forum search with several standard themes in the Mate desktop, and yes they now all work. But in some of them the Thunderbird issues return. It has been suggested that all these issues are related to the GTK2->GTK3 switch.
