[Sound] No Audio Output Detected

#1 Post by Desames »

Hi, everyone! I am new to your forums, and Linux in general. I am having an issue with my audio output. I typically work with my sound muted, but at some point my audio output was no longer recognized when I went to use it again (within the past 1-2 weeks or so). I have tried looking for some guides to resolve the "dummy audio output" issue / no audio output, but I am having problems as nothing I tried seems to have resolved anything.

I've included a few screenshots with my system information from the tutorials I found.

Any help would be much appreciated! Have a wonderful day!

Please post your output in code tags. Pictures are not searchable.

Does sound work booting from the previous installed kernel? It's possible kernel 6.0 introduced a bug and broke sound.

I can absolutely do that! How is this:

I'm not sure how to boot into a previously installed kernel. I would be happy to try it out if you can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for all your help, it's very much appreciated!

That's great, thanks for doing that.

You have posted your output and comment inside the quote tags, that's the only problem. If you edit your post, you should see a

</quote>

tag at the bottom - that needs to be at the top, after "Pictures are not searchable." Don't worry - done it myself before.

When you boot, you should see the Grub screen, usually blue, with a countdown timer for 4 seconds at the bottom. Reboot, and have your finger on the down arrow key. When the Grub menu appears, click on the down arrow to Advanced Options and press enter. You should see options to boot from an older kernel. Choose the previous kernel. System default is to save backup kernels, so there should be at least one there.

Booting from the previous kernel is completely safe. The system should boot normally from that point - assuming the previous kernel worked, of course.

You're welcome for the help. This sound issue seems to be affecting quite a few issues, so if we can get to the bottom of it, it will help other users too. Thanks for the information provided.

hello

i managed to get pipewire running on my system. i completely uninstalled pulse audio, except for xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin, which is part of the xfce desktop, and installed all the necessary pipewire dependencies.

what was originally getting me hung up was not having any output devices or sound output. to solve this problem, i went to the "configuration" tab of the pavucontrol (xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin) sound mixer and chose "analog stereo output." after i did this i had output devices again and sound from my speakers, headphones, etc.

one other thing i did was to permanently change the default clock rate from 48000 khz to 44100. i did this because whenever i opened an audio application (like ardour or audacity) the sample rate was set to 48000, which i rarely use. to do this i went to /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf and un-hashed and edited default.clock.rate line in /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf to 44100.

hope this helps!

I tried booting into a previous version (6.0.0-3-amd64) and the problem is still present there. I only have 6.0.0-4-amd, and 6.0.0-3-amd64 versions in the grub screen to select (and the associated recovery mode selections).

I would be happy to try this, but I'm not sure how to go about it. How do I uninstall pulse audio, minus the xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin? Whenever I uninstall a program I typically use "apt-get purge", my understanding is that "apt-get remove" leaves the configuration file. Is it some variation of this?

Thanks for all your help, I appreciate your time!

Re: [Sound] No Audio Output Detected

#9 Post by FreewheelinFrank »

You should follow the instructions in the Debian Wiki. It is not necessary to uninstall Pulseaudio first. When I switched to the new sound system in Testing, I had to install pipewire-pulse manually, but it may happen automatically as it is a recommend of WirePlumber. This may be a recent change, as I installed pipewire-pulse six weeks ago after sound stopped working. Up to this point, PulseAudio is not uninstalled by default (or wasn't for me). If you install Pipewire for Alsa clients, PulseAudio is uninstalled automatically.

Not sure why this didn't occur to me straight away, as I'd fixed the same problem on my computer.
Debian Testing/Unstable

The newer version of PipeWire that will be present in Debian 12, and that is currently present in Debian Testing/Unstable, has vastly improved compatibility and reliability, and is also much easier to configure as a replacement.

Two session managers are now available. The one pulled in by default (pipewire-media-session) is primitive, and is best when using PipeWire just for its basic functionality like screensharing. When using PipeWire as your system's sound server, the maintainer recommends installing the more advanced WirePlumber instead. This command will install WirePlumber while removing the old session manager:

# apt install wireplumber pipewire-media-session-

You will then need to enable WirePlumber in "systemd" (running as user, not as root):

$ systemctl --user --now enable wireplumber.service

When using WirePlumber, the amount of required configuration to use PipeWire as your sound server is very minimal. In fact, the WirePlumber package recommends pipewire-pulse, so that will likely happen automatically. You'll only have to enable the ALSA and JACK layers manually, which no longer require creating an empty file in your media session's configuration directory (as that directory won't even exist when using WirePlumber), but will still require copying files from your /usr/share/doc/pipewire/examples/ directory, as described in the Debian 11 instructions.
PulseAudio

Install the pipewire-pulse package, and reboot. This will configure PipeWire to activate its PulseAudio replacement daemon. Verify that it's enabled by running:

LANG=C pactl info | grep '^Server Name'

If PipeWire is configured properly, this will print "Server Name: PulseAudio (on PipeWire 0.3.XX)" If it's not working properly, see the Debian 11 instructions for masking PulseAudio.

PS, I also have the XFCE panel plugin - it seems to work quite happily with pipewire-pulse.
