I installed testing using netinstall with firmware download.
The installation went without a hitch.
On rebooting it stalls with the missing firmware messages in the attached picture.
I assume this refers to my ethernet network card.
What I don't understand is how the net install went ahead if the firmware for the network card was/is missing.
I understand it's a Realtek chip but how do I install the firmware post-installation?
Would I be better off installing from the full install DVD, which I'm now downloading?
I used Debian a fair bit, but it's a long time ago (ten years plus) and my knowledge is very rusty.
All I will say is I do remember it was a lot easier to install back then for some reason.
Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Post Install Firmware
Sometimes, the firmware might support basic functionality, but is missing some special stuff. The kernel will complain about that, even though you might have little problems with it. My video card for example works fine, but the buggy drivers claim I can't set the brightness, which isn't true.
So, the important question is: Does your Ethernet connection work as intended with the speed you're paying for? Do you experience outages?

Re: Post Install Firmware
Hi
Thanks for the reply.
I've fixed it.
My rusty cogs ground into motion and all I did was add 'nomodeset' to the grub menu.
So it looks like it was a graphics issue and nothing to do with the network card.
Anyway I'm in business, have got the graphics drivers installed and am running Debian again after many years.
It's good to be back.

What do you mean by "with firmware download" ?anotherusername wrote: ↑2022-12-09 10:23 I installed testing using netinstall with firmware download.
Which ISO image did you use ?
A missing firmware should not stall the system startup.anotherusername wrote: ↑2022-12-09 10:23 On rebooting it stalls with the missing firmware messages in the attached picture.
Some ethernet firmware are optional, they are not required for basic operation and only provide additional features such as offloading.anotherusername wrote: ↑2022-12-09 10:23 What I don't understand is how the net install went ahead if the firmware for the network card was/is missing.
Install the package firmware-realtek from the non-free section.anotherusername wrote: ↑2022-12-09 10:23 I understand it's a Realtek chip but how do I install the firmware post-installation?
