Installing debian on a phone

#1 Post by Siesta6821 »

Hello,

I was gifted a Samsung Galaxy S8 with a faulty battery that cannot charge. I was thinking I could use it as a server, connecting it to an external HDD.
While I dabbled a bit with PostMarket OS, which has a nice and straightforward guide, I wanted to know if there was the possibility to install Debian on it, to have more choice and more stability.
As I said, my goal is to use it solely as a server, so I don't care about it being usable as a phone, just for it to be able to boot and connect to the internet through ethernet.

Is it... technically possible? And if yes, what are some resources I could use?

Hi
I reckon it's not possible.
Regarding the battery you could have it replaced. I recently had a new battery put in an old S7 device.
I think your best best bet would be to install /e/os on it assuming it's Exynos.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

I already have a nice phone that suits my needs, so that's why I thought I could use it as a VPS, since it has a nice processor and large amounts of ram. As kind of an upgraded Raspberry Pi.
As I said I can already run PMOS on it, which is basically Alpine. I'll see maybe if I can hijack it with bedrock to get to my goals. Else I'll have to settle for using Alpine...

Thank you very much for your help!
