[Forum] How to keep your thread(s) from getting removed, moved, or locked.

#1 Post by donald »

How to keep your thread(s) from getting removed, moved, or locked.

Sometimes threads on the forums will be locked, moved, or removed by the Forum Staff.

We would like to share with you ways to avoid that from happening to a thread that you have put some effort and time into, so here are a few guidelines:

1) Familiarize yourself with the overall guidelines for forum use: Forum guidelines. Please read before first post!

Those guidelines apply to the entirety of the forums here.

2) We have several sub-forum categories which should cover most topics, questions, or inquires. Be sure to post your thread in the most appropriate area for it. If it is a Hardware issue please post it in the Hardware sub-forum, if it is Desktop or Multimedia Desktop or Multimedia forum.

The forum staff may move threads to other areas of the forum so the thread is in the appropriate area, as a benefit this may get the thread more views in an area that other users who can contribute to it will see it and whom may be of assistance to you or have more of an interest in what you would like to ask or discuss.

3) Familiarize yourself with the Forum layout, our current Forum structure:
  • Debian Development
    Debian Development Discussion
User discussion about Debian Development, Debian Project News and Announcements. Not for support questions.
  • Help and Support:
    Installation
Ask for help with issues regarding the Installations of the Debian O/S.

    Beginners Questions
New to Debian (Or Linux in general)? Ask your questions here!

    General Questions:
If none of the specific sub-forums seem right for your thread, ask here.

    Desktop and Multimedia:
    Desktop Environment and Multimedia questions.

    System and Network Configuration:
Linux Kernel, Network, and Services configuration.

    Hardware:
Need help with peripherals or devices?

    Programming:
Programming languages, Coding, Executables, Package Creation, and Scripting.
  • Testing & Unstable
Sid's Playpen. -- Debian Unstable and Testing --
    - - ALL UNSTABLE / TESTING THREADS SHOULD BE POSTED HERE - -
This sub-forum is the dedicated area for the ongoing Unstable/Testing releases of Debian. User support only. Use the software, give, and take advice with caution.
  • Community
    Forum information, requests, and feedback.
Code of conduct, suggestions, and information on forums.debian.net.

    General Debian
Here you can discuss every aspect of Debian. Note: not for support requests!

    Off-Topic
Off-Topic discussions about science, technology, and non Debian specific topics.
  • Documentation
    Docs, HowTos, Tips & Tricks
Share your HowTo, Documentation, Tips and Tricks. Not for support questions!

4) The Off-Topic section is the catch all section for most other threads. Off-topic would be something of technical nature or a development in the world of technology, or something that you want to share with the community, we do try to stay in the field we are in but sometimes things come up or someone goes far far far off course. This is that area. Be mindful things that are out of band may be locked or removed. Use the area wisely.

5) Enjoy the forums and community, try not to flame or ALL CAPS at people.

6) Use the report button, or ignore the post that irks you, hit the report button if you must, the staff will respond. Don't respond to posters who are here to troll or get you embroiled into something that gets their and your account locked.
Typo perfectionish.

Staff interaction

#2 Post by donald »

1) Please respect the Staff here on the forums.

We are all literally volunteers here. Please don't argue with them, engage in word battles, or troll them. All of that makes their task much more difficult and shows them no appreciation for the Herculean task at hand we have here of keeping the forums clean of spammers, confusion, ill-mannered posters, along with tons of background work and very little thanks.

We only have a few tools here to work with problematic posters: Verbal, System Warning, Timeout, Ban.

Why do that? Not worth it.

Problem with a moderator? PM them. Still going on? PM an admin. Problem with an admin? PM them. Still going on? PM donald. Be wary, we are human and admit to making mistakes and can reflect on or revert some things. We cannot do that if you go off the deep end.
Typo perfectionish.

Member Interaction

2) Please respect the other members in the community here on the forums.

We can all be extremely passionate about something we believe in, but we cannot let that passion divert into other energies and dilute the message or point you are trying to make. Take a step back and come back a day or so later. Nothing posted online is worth losing or having your account suspended, not just here but anywhere.

Lets all laugh at and not do this:
