[Suggestion] Question and/or Suggestion

#1 Post by cds60601 »

Hi there!

Q1 - is this forum supported by its name-sake? Meaning, Not only in an official manner as in an official support outlet, but as in financially?
Q2 - If the forum is NOT supported financially, wouldn't it be nice if each of the 40k plus users have a place (Patreon perhaps) to set up a one dollar subscription?

Think about what the forum-supremes could to with that funding. If at the very least, it could off some form of funds for the admins (or whomever) that sacrifice personal time to keep this place moving along.
Additionally, it would also help to pay the bills that are incurred for hardware etc. Not to mention the possibilities of upgrading.

TBH, I have not checked to see if indeed there is a Patreon account for the forum so if there is, this would be moot. This was just a thought so I don't really expect it go anywhere... One can dream though.

Wouldn't matter to me for two reasons:
1) I don't pay for anything online or in any medium except cash/cheque
2) I might start wanting reimbursement for my valuable consulting services I provide online.

Interesting take on my question(s).
The suggestion was not intended to pay for helping end users but for the time they spend maintaining and upgrading both hardware and software.
Mistakenly, I should have specifically stated in the wording that the funds would be geared toward the work that is done with upgrades in addition to the purchasing of hardware, hosting services, and any other bills associated with maintaining the forum.

Nonetheless, I don't expect much to come of this - pretty much was a question.

A1 - Yes. Around 2021-08 the forums were moved directly under Debian support and Infrastructure -Announcement Post, to become an official project resource. www.$foo.debian.net domains are set up for Debian Developers to self host services which are provided on commercial cloud providers which are paid for by Debian ourselves. All of the .net domains have their administrator, service description, and status shown on the Debian Net Domains page . For the forums you all have me. :)

A2 - It is a nice idea, but at this time, at least for forum needs we are taken care of. I'm not sure how it would work if we were to take active donations for something as we do not really have a need for anything and we do not directly sell anything. If people want to give financially it would be ideal to Donate directly to the project itself, or Contribute in some fashion to the project with a work, help on the Wiki, or posting here on these forums to help and guide fellow users.

All of Debian is volunteer driven, even here. No one is paid to do anything.
Typo perfectionish.
