[Hardware] Huawei phone does not mount anymore

#1 Post by anika »

Hello all,
since recently I cannot mount my phone anymore, it always worked before.
phone is Huawei and operating system Debian Linux neo 4.19.0-18-amd64
It was automagically mounted and I could open the files with caja my filebrowser.

I do update/upgrade my linuxsystem about every 3 months, the phone I don't know, that goes automatically
Don't know what the cause can be, I get the error:
cannot find the udev-appareil
libmtp error unknown error
And it is not mounting. I want to transfer my videos on it to computer.

>jmtpfs ~/Huawei
Device 0 (VID=12d1 and PID=107f) is a Huawei Y5 2017.
error returned by libusb_claim_interface() = -6LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'MtpErrorCantOpenDevice'
what(): Can't open device
Afgebroken

I tried installing thunar and pcmanfm, none mounts my phone.

In Thunar I see it under mtp://HUAWEI_JAT-L41_YKCNW20616001977/, it says 0 elements, because it is unreadable..
In dmesg I see:
[344507.844485] usb 2-1: Product: JAT-L41
[344507.844487] usb 2-1: Manufacturer: HUAWEI
[344507.844489] usb 2-1: SerialNumber: YKCNW20616001977

[344507.847674] scsi host4: usb-storage 2-1:1.1
nothing in red, nothing that shows any error (except for my printer, that does not work anymore either)
dmesg including removable drives as well:

Code: Select all

What is exactly your Debian Version ? You can check with the following commands:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/version
lsb_release -a
uname -a
anika wrote: 2023-01-23 19:48 Don't know what the cause can be, I get the error:

Code: Select all

cannot find the udev-appareil
libmtp error unknown error
And it is not mounting. I want to transfer my videos on it to computer.
udev-appareil is not a Debian package and it is not a file owning to a Debian package. Where does it come from ? This could be an interesting clue to investigate. The second message error could be related to the previous one.

Device 0 (VID=12d1 and PID=107f) is a Huawei Y5 2017.

This error message seems to be related to the previous one "libmtp error unknown error".

The phone is seen as mass storage. Perhaps it's not currently recognized as an MTP device [1]. Check if the phone is configured to be recognized as a MTP device, according to its user manual.

Re: [Hardware] Huawei phone does not mount anymore

Ok, thank you for your time and answer.

Code: Select all

lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:	Debian
Description:	Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
Release:	10
Codename:	buster
uname -a
Linux neo 4.19.0-18-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.208-1 (2021-09-29) x86_64 GNU/Linux
I never installed nothing manually, all my packages come from official Debian.org, main, contrib, security.
It is not a package, a search doesn’t reveal any package with udev-appareil. So it must be part of another package, no idea, need more time to figger that one out.
The phone is seen as mass storage.
I wish it was, because all my external disks are mounted without problem. But that phone does not show nothing anywhere anymore, have the phone for over 2 years now and it was effortlessly mounted a zillion times before.
If it was seen as mass storage it would treat it as my other external disks… I would love a way to do that, because setting permissions are always trouble with MTP. Never understood why MTP needs to exist.

If I ever find out (but I probably never will :( ) I will post it here.
Thanks

Aki

Forgive me, but the current updated kernel version for Debian Buster should be "linux-image-4.19.0-23-amd64 (4.19.269-1)" (according to [1] and [2]).

Therefore, your OS seems not to be updated or it is partially updated. You can verify it with the following commands (they will not upgrade the system):

Code: Select all

script log.txt
apt-get update
apt-get --simulate upgrade
exit
The output of previous commands will be in the file log.txt for your reference.

Hi,
Correct, I found a tutorial online on how to lock a package from being installed/upgraded or removed. I used that to stop my kernel from changing at every update. (Apt-mark )
When it works it works, no need to change kernel IMHO, (and risking loosing printer or phone).
At that time everything still worked perfectly as it should.

Code: Select all

root@neo:/home/anika# apt-get upgrade
Pakketlijsten worden ingelezen... Klaar
Boom van vereisten wordt opgebouwd
De statusinformatie wordt gelezen... Klaar
Opwaardering wordt doorgerekend... Klaar
De volgende pakketten zijn achtergehouden:
  linux-image-amd64
0 opgewaardeerd, 0 nieuw geïnstalleerd, 0 te verwijderen en 1 niet opgewaardeerd.
It tells me everytime the package is withheld.

Months later all of a sudden my printer and phone does not work anymore, will it be related, can be or not.
However, I will not update kernel and risk loosing more, not until I have a second computer ready to work on. I cannot afford to make it worse, that is why I blocked that package in the first place.
I know this is trouble, in all the years I use Debian, the only times my system got broken was because of kernelupdates, and then the hardwareproblems follow and beybey system.

Thanks for your help :)

Hello,
An old kernel should not be enough to cause the issue you reported. Did you put in hold other packages ?

EDIT:
What is the output of the following command ?

Code: Select all

apt-get --simulate dist-upgrade
