[Hardware] touchpad stopped working

#1 Post by lucyferu »

i have no idea when it happened.
i actually recently fixed it.

anyway, i've checked this article and, when i run

Code: Select all

egrep -i 'synap|alps|etps|elan' /proc/bus/input/devices
i receive no answers.
if i check

Code: Select all

cat /proc/bus/input/devices
there is no sign of the touchpad.

i've also uninstalled

Code: Select all

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
(despite having installed it to fix the previous issue) and installed

Code: Select all

 xserver-xorg-input-libinput xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-input-mouse
instead (as suggested by the article linked above, but nothing happened/changed.

can anyone help?

Code: Select all

Re: [Hardware] touchpad stopped working

#2 Post by p.H »

Isn't the touchpad disabled in BIOS or by user action ? Some BIOS disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected. On some laptops the touchpad can be disabled by user action such as double-tap on the upper left corner (usually indicated by a light).
Check the kernel logs (/var/log/kern.log* or journalctl) and compare with the last boot with the touchpad working.
How is the touchpad attached ? If PS/2, check this as root after boot:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -i -e mouse -e i8042 -e serio -e touch

i wouldn't know where to take that. also, i only realised yesterday it stopped working, but im sure it wasn't already before.
like you said, i thought that it was disabled when the mouse was attached (which i wouldn't like anyway), but yesterday i tried to use it for the first time without the mouse being on and that's how i noticed the issue.

anyway, i run

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -i -e mouse -e i8042 -e serio -e touch
after boot, and that's what i got:

Code: Select all

[ 0.469383] i8042: PNP: PS/2 Controller [PNP030b:PS2K] at 0x60,0x64 irq 1
[ 0.469384] i8042: PNP: PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled, if this is incorrect please boot with i8042.nopnp
[ 0.471926] serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1
[ 0.471983] mousedev: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
[ 0.485012] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0
[ 1.184597] usb 1-3: Product: USB Optical Mouse

so i guess this
i8042: PNP: PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled
sounds like an issue, but i wouldn't know how to do this
if this is incorrect please boot with i8042.nopnp
any help?

Assuming the touchpad is connected to the PS/2 AUX port, you can try what the message suggests: at the GRUB menu, press "e" to edit the menu entry (not persistent), move to the end of the line starting with "linux", add "i8042.nopnp" (without the quotes) and press F10 to boot. If that works, you can make it persistent by adding it to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub and running update-grub.

Did you check the BIOS settings ?

i also run

and you can see the result here.

Any change in the kernel log ?
Maybe the touchpad is not attached to PS/2 but another bus type (internal USB, I2C...)

No, it only means that hwinfo does not know what kind of device it is.

With the same dmesg command.

Of course. What is the point of comparing if you do not change anything ?

ok, this it the result this time.

i noticed there was written ro quiet at the end of the linux line, which i don't believe they were there the first time i inserted i8042.nopnp.
no idea if it means anything, sharing in case it does.

I do not see the output of the dmesg command.
"ro quiet" are default options in the kernel command line.

The message about the AUX port being disabled is gone but still no touchpad is detected. Is the "psmouse" module loaded ?

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep psmouse || modprobe psmouse
Maybe the touchpad failed, or is disconnected, or disabled in the BIOS, or is not a PS/2 type. Hard to tell without old logs from when the touchpad was still working.

i think it's possible the issue started after i've updated the kernel to 5.19.9 now that i think of it.
which i did to fix an issue with the keyboard. so, if i downgrade, i might get the touchpad, but lose the keyboard...

Re: [Hardware] touchpad stopped working

How did you install this kernel ? The version does not look like a Debian kernel.

PS: It is useless to quote the whole previous post.

Edit : reading your previous topic, the touchpad still worked on 25th so you must still have kernel logs from that time.

Code: Select all

zgrep -i pad /var/log/kern.log*

So you compiled the kernel from upstream source. Any reason for not using a Debian kernel from bullseye-backports ?

From the old kernel log it appears that you have an Elantech I2C touchpad (not PS/2) connected through a DesignWare PCI I2C adapter.
So I guess you need i2c-designware-pci and elan_i2c compiled as modules or built-in.

Code: Select all

modinfo -n i2c-designware-pci elan_i2c

can't remember well, but i think the system was giving my version as the latest version and wouldn't let me update somehow?

it didn't work. :(

You need to add bullseye-backports to your sources.list.

This command is not supposed to "work" but to indicate if these drivers are present. Looks like they are not. You need to add support for these devices with make menuconfig and rebuild the kernel. Or install the kernel from bullseye-backports.
