Debian install freeze

#1 Post by ratatoskr »

Hello everyone,
I have a pretty new laptop Asus Vivobook and I want to install Debian testing nonfree on it. Everything works well after installation, but only if I select an unencrypted variants of disk partition. If I select encrypted LVM (I need full disk encryption very much, because my previous laptop was stolen), random data write to disk, I select my passphrase and after clicking “write changes to disk” (or so) the installation freezes and nothing happens, I tried every possible variant. No other OS is on the disk. This also happens when installing Sid nonfree or newest Manjaro. Only working system with encryption on this machine is Fedora Rawhide, but I do not want to use such edge unstable distro. But I have to use at least kernel 6.1, with older kernels my keyboard is not working.
Here is my HW probe: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=1c798340db
Any ideas? Could it be a firmware/driver problem? I am not very experienced user, sorry if it is a stupid question. Thank you very much.

This forum has an appropriate section for problems linked to the installation / use of " Debian Unstable and Testing " :

I am sorry, the header is not written like "stable only" but "Ask for help with issues regarding the Installations of the Debian O/S. " and my post was accepted.

I moved my question to the testing section. Installation source here: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... 64/iso-cd/

Waste of time if the drive contains no sensitive data.

Can you switch to other consoles ?
(Ctrl+)Alt+F2 : installer shell
(Ctrl+)Alt+F3 : installer shell
(Ctrl+)Alt+F4 : installer logs
Alt+F1: back to the text installer
Alt+F5: back to the graphic installer
Ctrl is needed only from the graphic installer.

Yes, switching works, but I don't know what to do there. Freezes at this point (I really waited few hours) https://mega.nz/file/RjgD0KJQ#kNDNiTsfr ... 2CG8ZJ61cY

You can check which processes are running with "ps".
From the log screen shot it appears that the encrypted volume and LVM logical volumes were successfully created.

P.S.: no need to quote the full post.

You can do a lot of useful things, actually. For example, you could copy the installer directory log (/var/log/installer/) and kernel log (/var/log/dmesg) to an external usb drive to analyse and/or share them after the issue occurred.

Re: Debian install freeze

Hi, I have the same issue too.

I'm trying to Install Debian Testing.
I tried Debian nonfree weekly build (not 'edu' version).

I've only tried the 'encryption on LVM method' and it freezes every time. (I've tried many times)

I took a look at Alt+F4 installer log. Nothing looks wrong in the few lines I could see. Just lines showing that the various logical volumes were created etc. No errors listed.

I went to Alt+F2 and ran 'ps' and I'm not really sure what I'm looking at.
(But nothing looks wrong there either!)

The last three lines are

Code: Select all

17699 root 5776 S parted_server
29166 root 2932 S {07cros} /bin/sh/ /lib/partman/check.d/07cros
29237 root 2932 S {07cros} /bin/sh/ /lib/partman/check.d/07cros
Is it possible to use the installer from Stable and sort of hi-jack it half way through and get it to install from the Testing repositories? (I'm presuming the Stable installer can successfully install on encrypted drive on LVM?)

Hmm... partman-cros is a shiny new d-i component which was added very recently.

Code: Select all

Description:
partman-cros - Add partman support for ChromeOS kernel partitions (udeb)
Not sure what the above script does exactly though.

I'll repeat what I already wrote many times: the testing installer is for testing the installer, not for installing the testing distribution. The recommend way to install the testing distribution is to use the stable installer then dist-upgrade to testing. Any bugs found in the testing installer should be reported in the Debian bug tracking system.

Sorry. My bad. I'm new around here. I only came by as I was having difficulty with the installer.

Some further searching and I see that what you said is exactly correct:
Installing Testing by upgrading from Stable is the recommended way!

In fact it was written in plain sight on the Debian Testing wiki page.
Maybe it's just me, but I find the entire Debian website/wiki one of the most difficult sites to glean actual useful information from. Whereas the ArchWiki is quite the opposite.

If I install the minimum Debian stable (just command line), then upgrade to testing, where can I find a list of packages to install Gnome? Or maybe there is a website with them listed? Or better still can I somehow re-run the installer and let it do it automatically?

Run tasksel and select Debian desktop environment + GNOME. Or install task-gnome-desktop.

@ratatoskr @sundry
Just for the record: what is the configuration of your computer: CPU, RAM and disk space availability ?

Thank you. That's just what I need.

I'm installing on a new empty 1TB SSD. 8GB RAM. Intel i7-6700.

You may also wish to install language packages such as task-<language> and task-<language>-desktop.

Thanks for the tip.
Would that still be necessary if I only want English and I'll already have set the locale and keyboard to English at the initial basic Debian Stable install?

I don't know, I always install with a different language. There is a task-english package which pulls american and british English dictionaries.
