[Discussion] avatar size limit
So, with respect, is the 10KB avatar size limit suppose to be some kind of test to see how crafty we are in getting an image in under that limit?
80x80=6400, so uncompressed that mean 10BK give you a max of 10/6.4 bytes per pixel for your color data. JPG and PNG images will come in over that limit. xpm on indexed color data works, but isn't recognized by the BBS.
I could probably spend a few hours futzing with colormaps and compression, but I lack the motivation for something that shouldn't be that difficult.

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
The size could be moved up to 120x120, though I feel it would eventually become distracting. As it is there are few users with massive signatures here that break screen sizes. It may be wise to address both at the same time, upping the avatar size and lowering the signature value.
Let a few other people post in this thread to give us a better idea of who actually cares about this.

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
It's not so much the pixel the pixel resolution as the alloted 10KByte of storage. compressing a typical 80x80 JPG or PNG generally exceeds that limit. 80x80 is more than adequate for an avatar icon. Maybe allow and render image formats that better compress or support lesser color depth. I tried to upload an xpm image of suitable size but the format wasn't accepted.
I have not tried gif format. For a long time gif was frowned upon in the internet community due to the patent silliness.

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
Ah, I understand now. I moved it from 10,000 Bytes (9.77KB) to 100,000 Bytes (97.7KB) which is pretty large considering the last value. For a aspect ratio of 1, it should cover most things. Depending on new avatar uploads the value can be scaled back.
After a week with no further comments, we can bump the size up to 100x100.

@donald
I moved it from 10,000 Bytes (9.77KB) to 100,000 Bytes (97.7KB) which is pretty large considering the last value
Now
After all the effort of reducing my image size 10,000 bytes I even used webp to try to reduce size I found it a frustrating but very useful lessons in Gimp it was actually
and most of all useful in lessons of patience.
Now you bump it up to 100,000 bytes
How will people learn patience.
Thank You Donald

@artytux
haha, sorry.
Most things around here can be modified or 'fixed' if someone just asks.

frustrating but very useful lessons in Gimp
gimp can be extremely frustrating. I ended up just posting as a gif, but I wouldn't have normally considered that format since it has fallen out of favor on the internet. gif is about 5KByte for my 80x80 image. I wasn't able to get the same jpeg to under 12ish.

100x100 image size for avatars would be very much appreciated, :).donald wrote: ↑2023-02-06 06:33 Ah, I understand now. Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
I don't see any advantage in increasing size to 100x100. It's currently 80x80. Mine is 80x66 PNG which weighs 9KB.

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
Well you just had to "further comment" and ruin my attempt at getting it increased :(.
80x80 is fine but it is definitely on the small side... for reference Discords tiny profile picture will accept 120x120, and Steam 184x184.
Of course I make no friends comparing a Linux forum to proprietary applications, but I think you can see my point. 3600 more pixels would be nice! And I feel like 100x100 is a nice even number.
Be seeing you...

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
Well it needs to be large enough to be a useful container for steganography, right?

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
My smallest version is 100 x 99, so I refrained from setting it because of that.

Re: [Discussion] avatar size limit
As this was proposed by @donald and several respondents wished it to happen, avatar size limit is now 100x100 pixels.
