OUCH --you did note I am 84=I doubt I will live long enough to read all that let alone understand it. It seems to all be related to a Bumblebee version and I believe my version is bullseye. Is it not possible given where I am (it is obviously looking for a typed input) (is it going to be the 1st of hundreds or will this get me into the program with a desktop)? I am not a programmer. I just want to try an alternative to a windows O/S. Unless someone can give me a more precise instruction I may be closing in on a bailout. Surely it doesn't require multitudes of links and hundreds of typed commands to get beyond where I am.

Fred, as you have obviously managed to burn an ISO successfully, I am going to suggest that we get you booted into a live image. I am sure that starting to use Debian on the laptop will be better for your confidence than staring at a page of instructions that don't mean anything to you.

I also suggest that once you have tried the live image and are happy with the desktop and getting used to the system you use the graphical installer from the live session. It is easy to choose a wrong option during the install, so we can do it step by step. Post the options the installer is giving you and get some advice about what to select at each step.

First step if you want to use a Live DVD, search the serial number and see if the computer is 64bit. If it is, I would recommend KDE because it is like Windows 7, and should be reasonably familiar.

The implication I took from your comment is that truenorth would not be capable of answering the question, which in my judgement is both rude and dismissive. How would you feel if somebody made the same implication about you when you were attempting to learn something new? I accept that you were not intending to be rude, but please consider how others may view you comments, as per forum guide lines.

Be polite. Remember that the skill level of the forum members ranges from the absolute beginner to the very seasoned Linux user and what might be obvious to you might be very hard to understand for others.

Were I yours, I would proceed as follows :
Start with a good base : install a new SSD in the laptop ! ... of for example 120 GB
create a bootable USB using this ISO : debian-live-11.6.0-amd64-cinnamon.iso

Install Debian 11 using the CALAMARES installer .

Sorry for the absence .As is often the case in life I have had to prioritize which snakes and alligators snapping at me in the swamp I needed to deal with. At the moment I am not able to devote the attention I would want to my Debian installation. However more than just having an ISO I also believe I do have a live image installed on the portable HDD and probably in the process of getting it installed on the associated laptop. At least I think that is where I am. However as the O/S is installing it is demanding input from me. I believe it is hung up on a password demand from me and I do not know what to reply. Part of the problem is because I am working on a non functioning computer (the Debian one) I cannot send a screen capture to show what i am dealing with. Hopefully I will become active again in the not too distant future. I really appreciate the help you are all offering and have not found any rude or insulting comments on the thread so far. The ISO is on a flash drive/the live image is on a DVD disc (and I believe also installed partially on the computer). Thanks all. Fred

Installation will ask you to create a root (administration) and user password. For a single user system, it's OK to use the same password for both. Just for clarity, this means think up a new password, not enter an existing one.

Were you able to boot from the Live DVD disk? This should let you boot into Debian without installing to try it out first.
