IMO It would be useful to put the date of the original post in the search results. Some material is so dated, for my problem, that any result more than 2 years old is likely to give out-of-date information.

Search results show post dates. Is that not sufficient, or are they not showing for you?

On the backend it would be more helpful if members used the [solved] tags for threads. Then when reading a thread one could ascertain if the thread was relevant or a waste of time.
