This happens almost every time I watch a video and go to a different window, with the video still playing: the screen goes completely blank. It takes a mouse movement to unblank the screen. The unblanked screen only lasts for a split second before blanking out again. Over and over and over, so the computer is useless at that point until it's restarted.
This could theoretically be a hardware issue, but I have a hard time believing that it is. In fact, videos can play indefinitely without causing problems, as long as I don't try to change windows during replay.
Just in case this *is* a hardware issue, my video card is Intel Corporation HD Graphics 630.
Many thanks.

Does it happen if you start an Xorg session? (Cog wheel menu at log in.)

what @FreewheelinFrank said: remove the suspect elements from the chain to diagnose. simplest is twm/X11 (no wayland, no gnome) does it still happen?
