second display not working on imac after debian bookworm upgrade

#1 Post by giorez »

after I reinstalled debian from bullseye to bookworm, my second display stopped working. I actually use 2 displays on both windows and mac osx. the machine is imac 27, with VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Broadway PRO [Mobility Radeon HD 5850]. I also tryed differente cable, but no luck. I checked dmesg:

[drm:radeon_pci_probe [radeon]] *ERROR* radeon kernel modesetting for R600 or later requires firmware installed
See https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware for information about missing firmware

I installed installed firmware-amd-graphics, but the main display stays black and works just second display. How can I solve the issue?

Paste here input/output from inxi -GSIaz. Also attach here or pastebin the file Xorg.0.log. This file should exist in either in /var/log/ or ~/.local/share/xorg/. If firmware-radeon-graphics is not installed, you need to install it. Firmware-amd-graphics is for newer GPUs than your 5850.

I wrote the above last year in error. Radeon firmware in Debian is provided by firmware-amd-graphics. Its .deb package description contains:
Binary firmware for AMD/ATI graphics chips
This package contains the binary firmware for AMD/ATI graphics chips
supported by the radeon, amdgpu and r128 drivers.
Thus, a Radeon HD 5850 graphics card does need firmware-amd-graphics installed for competent operation.

The nomodeset items above bolded block Radeon GPUs from using more than one display. Grub needs to be reconfigured to omit nomodeset from /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/default/grub's GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line.

Nomodeset is designed as a troubleshooting parameter that enables minimal graphical mode display function. It is often required for installation to succeed, but must be purged post-installation for competent graphics operation, including to utilize a second display.

To test, strike the E key when the Grub menu appears, find the nomodeset string, remove it, then proceed with boot. If it fails, it could be a ramification of attempting to install catalyst drivers. I would expect complete catalyst removal to be prerequisite to success with the required FOSS packages.

Re: second display not working on imac after debian bookworm upgrade

#10 Post by giorez »

I installed firmware-amd-graphics.
I changed /etc/default/grub lines
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.modeset=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="line"
Then: sudo update-grub

I also tryed this:
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.modeset=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="line"

Unfurtately the second monitor doesn't work in linux, but just on OSX and Windowds.

If I change line into /boot/refind.conf:
from "Boot with standard options" "root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro nomodeset"
to "Boot with standard options" "root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro line"
main display turns to black during booting process, and second monitor always black. If I remove cable of second monitor, main monitor shows the booting process untill running properly.

There is anything related to the refind setting?

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.modeset=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="line"
Why "line"?
I also tryed this:
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="radeon.modeset=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="line"
Why "text"?
If I change line into /boot/refind.conf:
from "Boot with standard options" "root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro nomodeset"
to "Boot with standard options" "root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro line"
main display turns to black during booting process, and second monitor always black. If I remove cable of second monitor, main monitor shows the booting process untill running properly.
Again, what is "line" supposed to do?

You've gained ground by proving you can get rid of nomodeset. Now focus needs to goto a way to solve the black screens problem. We need to see the content of Xorg.0.log produced from a boot without using nomodeset. So, boot with both displays connected and without nomodeset. When boot finishes, disconnect one display, and use the other to capture the current Xorg.0.log showing that boot was done without using nomodeset, and attach it to your reply here. Do not paste it into your reply.

Note that most of the time, there will be also an Xorg.0.log.old wherever Xorg.0.log is found. Either can be acceptable if the Kernel command line: in the file contains the required parameters and omits the parameters to be excluded. It sometimes happens that an initial X failure is shortly followed by an automatic retry, which causes the two to be nearly identical, so that if one is useless, so is the other.
There is anything related to the refind setting?
As long as you're interested in having more than one display working, refind should have no relevance to any solution.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -GSIaz
...    parameters: root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro nomodeset
...
and this is the /var/log/Xorg.pid-1054.log

Code: Select all

...
[ 32.558] Kernel command line: root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro nomodeset text initrd=boot\initrd.img-6.6.15-amd64
...
As explained in comment #8, including nomodeset on the kernel command line prevents more than one display at a time from being used. As long as your goal is using two displays, you must find a way to exclude it from your kernel cmdlines. If it's still included in /etc/default/grub, your need to purge it. Nomodeset should only be included:
  • when required to capture information from a previous boot
  • when required to make configuration and/or software changes to fix broken normal booting
  • when a proprietary driver's installation instructions necessitates
  • when you absolutely must use the the computer and can tolerate having only one working display at low resolution to do so
Edits to /etc/default/grub and subsequent grub.cfg regeneration should be reserved for when changes to be made are expected to be permanent. When testing, each boot should be started using the E key at the Grub menu to configure boot parameters as required for that particular test boot being initiated. At the very least you should restore GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= to what it contained to start with, which keeps recovery mode boot stanzas in grub.cfg capable of doing their jobs.

Whatever has happened to cause the two bolded strings to appear where you see them above needs to be corrected. Here's what yours should look very similar to once your problem is solved and you succeed to login via GDM normally:

I suspect corruption in either /etc/default/grub and/or /boot/grub/grub.cfg. It's also possible that you are misusing the edit function after striking the "E" key at the Grub menu, causing loss of line-feed prior to the appearance of the "initrd" line. Please paste your /etc/default/grub here.

Code: Select all

menuentry "Debian 13 Testing (Trixie) defkernel 3 on P13" {
	load_video
	set gfxpayload=keep
	search --no-floppy --set=root --hint-efi=hd0,gpt13 --label pt3p13deb13
	linux	/boot/vmlinuz ro root=LABEL=pt3p13deb13 noresume ipv6.disable=1 net.ifnames=0
	initrd	/boot/initrd
}
Above is one of the Grub stanzas I use to boot Trixie here on a UEFI system. Note the absence of "initrd=boot\initrd.img" anywhere on the kernel cmdline or the "parameters:" section of inxi output. In normal Grub stanzas, initrd must occur only on the line immediately after the "linux" line. The "linux" line usually wraps once or twice before its logical end end, depending on the environment in which viewed, or edited, simply because it's usually too long to fit in the available width. Everything following linux in a Grub stanza up until the presence of initrd is considered one line. The line after the linux line's line-feed character is where "initrd" must appear.

If it's still unclear at this point how to proceed, copy the complete first two or three menuentries from your /boot/grub/grub.cfg file here.

If I change line into /boot/refind.conf:
...
I should have exited the thread when this appeared. I forgot everything I knew about using rEFInd. After acquiring my 2007 iMac and making it operable, I installed Linux on it before MacOS. Not long after I had trouble booting Linux, so found rEFInd as a solution, but that only lasted several months or more before I tamed the Mac into booting Linux without employing rEFInd. It's been through Linux upgrades 5 times since removing rEFInd.

If you want to first uninstall rEFInd, then try making Grub work without it, I can consider trying to help. But as long as it's employed, I'm qualified to provide only extremely limited advice.

thanks for your help so far, unfurtunatelly I don't know how to triple boot my iMac without refind. So I think I'll use two monitors just with osx and windows, and debian just with one signle monitor. It's strange how the super tricky os like linux, can't manage monitor how the popular mac/win does out of the box. In case I'll decide to abandon mac/win, your help will be precious.
