@kent_dorfman766
specifically find it more convenient for this laptop than a usb stick backup tool .
That's not a use case. That's a configuration. What do you want to use it for!? That's what dictates whether it's the right application.

Concerns the storage of legally required sensitive information related to recreational boating .
I am considering of this laptop to the fixed equipment of my little boat .
The law now allows this information to be carried on board in a digitized form but it must be immediately available and viewable by the marine police while sailing.
It goes without saying that this data is strictly personal and should not fall into the wrong hands .
As theft in the ports is not unthinkable and on the other hand in the areas where I operate it is very turbulent (tearing down a usb stick ... damaging the usb input) , would it be convenient/safe to have this data mobile and to me an SD card seems the ideal solution .

Although optional, this expands the connectivity options for peripherals/devices for this laptop which only has one usb 3.0 and one usb 2.0 .

OK. Now you've given me something I can work with. I agree that it is a sutiable application. However, don't use the uSD as the primary storage for that data. Store it on the the main laptop drive and bulk copy it for removal if necessary. As I think I mentioned. uSD is very fragile so discrete purposeful writes are preferred to adhoc file IO directly to the uSD.

Hello ,
Recap for the sake of clarity :
preliminary have placed the files I am talking about on the desktop for now .
In the end the intention is to have these files only on the removeable SD .... NOT on the SSD .

A 32GB SD card is more than enough .

With thanks to apologize for any "breakdown in communication" ... my native language is Dutch .

Based on re-reading the previous posts in this thread, either your uSD card itself is bad, is too big for the USB reader to recognize it, or the USB reader itself has issues.

In any case, I think we are branching from the "we can help you online" into the "I must see and test the hardware for myself" arena. Sorry.

Hello , indeed ,
- It could well be that the 128GB card is defective , certainly not out of the question .
- That the laptop cannot handle the 128GB card because of its size could well be .
- But the SD card reader itself is ok in my opinion , after all , reads a 1GB SD card flawlessly .

I expect the new 32GB card I ordered within a few days and I will report how it turned out.

Resolved :
the laptop does accept a 32 GB SD card :

Code: Select all

~$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 111,8G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 300M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda2 8:2 0 103,1G 0 part /
└─sda3 8:3 0 8,4G 0 part [SWAP]
sdb 8:16 1 28,8G 0 disk
└─sdb1 8:17 1 28,8G 0 part /media/*******/3F59-BC5A
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom
Disclaimer , questions remain ;
Was the 128GB a faulty card ?
In the case of this laptop , is it an unsuitable internal card reader and/or faulty firmware support ?
Leave further thoughts to the Conoscenti .
Nevertheless, thanks to @Aki @sunrat and @kent_dorfman766 for the interest and help on this thread .

It could be that the SD card reader (or it's driver) simply doesn't support SDXC (>32GB) cards... Or the card may just be dodgy. IME microSD cards are beaten only by 3.5" floppy disks for the "least reliable removable storage" award.
The only way to find out would be to try the 128GB card in a different device, post-2010 and known to accept SDXC.
Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. Four times is Official GNOME Policy.

Never heard it put quite like this before, but spot on!

And one of the many reasons I am so anti-RPI: Raspian running on a uSD card...Need I say more?

Update for the sake of completeness :

We tested the 128GB MicroSD in our Asus F509JA (windows 11) and the card was recognized immediately :

So it was not a faulty card but a SDXC story !
