[Hardware] [SOLVED] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
[Hardware] [SOLVED] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
Hello all,
I just built a new PC around the MSI MPG X570S EDGE MAX WIFI motherboard. It has an Intel WiFi 6 AX210 chipset.
I'm running Debian 11 Bullseye ( Kernel: 5.10.0-23-amd64 ). Specifically Debian 11 LTS (stability is important for me).
From the Ubuntu forums, this chipset and my kernel have a disagreement, covered in a bug report here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212371#c13
I've attempted the solution, to no avail.
Help me Obi-WAN Ken-wifi, you're my only hope ^_^

Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
You can try the newer firmware in bullseye-backports. deb download link at bottom of page.
If that doesn't help, try a newer 6.1 kernel from backports.
If you want to help us with more info on your machine, install inxi and copypaste the output of "inxi -Fxxxrza" in the terminal.

Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
Well, inxi does report that the iwlwifi driver is loaded for that 210...what are the symptoms of it not working?
And have you installed that newer firmware deb file download yet from backports?
I help out with backports for a Debian derived distro that has an AHS edition for really new hardware, currently with a lot of backports in that release by default. You could download its MX 21.3 AHS or KDE editions (KDE uses AHS by default) in ISO files, burn one to a USB pendrive or DVD, and then boot that to its default Live session, to see if the problem persists.
That way, you'd have a very strong indication if the backports will solve the problem on your Debian install without actually messing with it.

Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
Symptoms: no Bluetooth, no Wireless detected. Also no wireless interface detected (ex: ifconfig returns my ETH interface, but no WLAN* or similar interface).
I'm not opposed to going the backport route, I'm just so novice I don't know what to do ^_^
I made a SimpleScreenRecorder video, can host it on an online platform for viewing (recommendations?)
Thanks for your time and insight!

That's strange because inxi recognises the device
Not that I don't believe you but please post the full output of
Code: Select all
ip link
/usr/sbin/rfkill
apt policy firmware-iwlwifi

Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
Hello,
This wireless network interface has been reported as problematic many times.
The Debian Bug Tracking System tracked this issue: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=977299.
The upgrade to a more recent kernel then 5.10 version (with a working firmware) from Debian bullseye-backports is an option.
The upgrade to Debian Bookworm (Debian 12) is another option according to the aforementioned bug report.

Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
Understood, and thanks for your insight. So, noob question, but suppose I upgrade to Debian Bookworm, or upgrade the kernel to Bullseye-backports... from my Debian 11 LTS: can I then downgrade back to the LTS 11? I'd prefer to stay at LTS as stability is important to me.

Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
If you install a newer kernel, you can leave in place all the previous installed kernels that you want. Therefore, you can choose from which kernel to boot your system every time you want, even if it boots from the newest if you don't do nothing at boot time.
The next Debian Stable (Debian 12 alias Debian Bookworm) is about to be released in few days (June 10th), anyway.
Re: [Hardware] Intel WiFi 6 AX210 + kernel 5.10
Well well well, I'm enthused! Perchance my woes are just 6 days from being solved! Such a surprise! Thanks so much, I'll keep this post active and report back after 10JUN2023. Thanks again!

:D
You can add the tag "[Solved]" in the subject (after previous tags, if any) of the first post of the thread, for example:
