[Software] Debian install resolution 720x480 with Mate Desktop

#1 Post by lospala »

Hi
I use Ubuntu since 2006 but I want to give a try to Debian because I installed Bookworm RC3 and I noticed that system is faster with less resources consumption.
With RC3 I started fresh installed mate desktop at 1920 x 1080 but when I tried installing stable version with a netinst iso of Debian 11 there's no way to get my AMD 5500 card recognized neither installing propietary drives. It only has 720x480 and two minor screen resolutions.
I randomly move between Ubuntu and Debian using R-Drive that restores in the same partition the entire linux system. I don't want to continue with stable release install until I find what should I do to get my desktop running at 1920x1080
Any help?
Thank a lot
(Will pick all responses and then I will try with install again)

Hello,
Does the RC3 installer of Debian Bookworm (12) support the required screen resolution ?

It’s not. :D Debian Bookworm (12) is going to be released as the next Debian Stable in few days (June 10th).

Finally desisted . Still considering to divorce from Ubuntu and marry Debian on June 10th. The only way so far is to install Release Candidate and when final release appears I will change sources list to stable.

Did you read the Debian wiki entry about AMD graphics require non-free firmware yet? Do you have it installed in Debian?

Code: Select all

apt policy firmware-amd-graphics
Ubuntu installs it by Debian, but Debian has a strong stance against forcing non-free stuff on users.

Yes. In fact I tested Debian in 2009 but in this case I knew that Bookworm will be the first Debian version that allows to install mom-free software.
Regarding your question I installed mom fee graphic driver by AMD former ATI and nothing happened. That's was the reason why I moved to testing Bookworm.

I think you meant non-free, and where did you get info? I have been using Debian from Woody, and non-free has always been in the repo.

Opps my mom complains she was included in the repos :) I meant non-free firmware but I mispelled "software". Sorry

@lospala Glad to hear you are climbing out of the pit. Ubuntu is nothing but spyware, based on a debian core. You'll find that you have much more control and more options using pure Debian.

Thank you. I wouldn't say for sure it has spyware but what is remarkable for me is that with this testing version of Bookworm I have'nt gpt anymore those black screena when systems seems to be working with a lot of memory, mostly when stacking pictures or editing big raw photos. On the other hand I did not upgraded Ubuntu to 22.04 version because some packages are only available with snap or flatpack and I don't like this way. Some other packages like enfuse (crucial for me) have not been included in repos so, I will give Debian a try.
