[Solved] timeshift gui on KDE Plasma

#1 Post by jfabernathy »

I installed timeshift via APT on a KDE Plasma 5.27 laptop install. I can run sudo timeshift from the console just fine, but I can't click on the system -> Timeshift in the menu. It gets no response at all.

Timeshift on another distro like Mint 21 will pop up an authorization request for the sudo password to continue.

I can run sudo timeshift-launcher from the console and the timeshift gui will open. It works except for Browse a snapshot. You can see from log on the console that Dolphin will not run it in sudo mode.

Any idea on what's missing?

I use KDE Plasma's native backup tool, so I don't use Timeshift. What happens if you add sudo timeshift-launcher to Timeshift's menu entry?

Hm, try specifying the full path:

sudo /path/to/timeshift-launcher

On Linux Mint Debian Edition which is based on Debian 11 Bullseye, than install timeshift and it works as expected from the menu, but I'm not sure what there trick is unless I install that on a VM and check it out.

OK. I tried installing it, and just timeshift-launcher was needed to launch the application. A popup window showed, asking for the root password, and it started after I entered the password.

Do you have polkit-kde-agent-1 installed?

BTW, I installed this on a laptop using the RC4 of Debian 12. So maybe something missing there? I used the Expert install so I could create the @ and @home subvolumes required to run timeshift on BTRFS systems.

Check ~/.xsession-errors for anything relevant. Also check the systemd journal (if you're using systemd).

You should also state which version of Debian you are using; this command will show us that:

Code: Select all

apt policy
EDIT: and make sure the policykit-1 package is installed.

Check ~/.xsession-errors for anything relevant. Probably best to just delete the file then try the menu entry and immediately check the contents of the file so only those messages are present (if any).

Also check the systemd journal (if you're using systemd).

I can run from the console

Code: Select all

sudo timeshift-launcher
and after entering my password it runs as normal. However when I click on browse nothing happens except I see this on the console:

Code: Select all

Running Dolphin with sudo can cause bugs and expose you to security vulnerabilities.
Instead use Dolphin normally and you will be prompted for elevated privileges when performing file operations that require them.

That works from the command line if you put sudo in front of it. However, Browse still has issues with dolphin.

The missing package is

Code: Select all

 pkexec
That fixes both running it from the Application Launcher menu and using the Browse feature withinTimeshift

Thank You for that. No messing around was needed, just installing that package.
