I just bought a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 laptop with ubuntu preinstalled, and I would like to install Debian instead. I downloaded 'firmware-11.7.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso' from 'cd.image.debian.org', and wrote the installation image to an unmounted USB drive like this:
sudo cp firmware-11.7.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso /dev/sda
sudo sync
In the UEFI, I changed the boot order so that the above USB drive is first. When I reboot, I get to the grub menu, with no idea how to proceed.
Any help with this Step 1 would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Are you sure that /dev/sda was the external usb drive when you wrote the ISO image on it ?

Does the netinstall image work? The DVD image should work on a USB stick though
What exactly do you see in this GRUB menu? Are there any menuentries?

Re: Booting from installation image on USB drive takes me to grub menu
I misspoke; it doesn't boot to a menu, but rather to the GRUB command line. Following https://askubuntu.com/questions/883992/ ... mmand-line I used 'ls' to look for a 'grub' directory. The only one I could find was '(hd0,gpt2)/boot/grub', which is the same as what I see when I type 'set'.
I haven't tried the netinstall image yet.

Re: Booting from installation image on USB drive takes me to grub menu
When I google your laptop description, it says it has a 12th gen intel processor, if that is the case, I think is too new for bullseye's installer, you may have better luck with bookworm (the current testing version), which is set to be released on 6/10.
[Solved] Booting from installation image on USB drive takes me to grub menu
You're right ... I tried installing from 'debian-bookworm-DI-rc4-amd64-netinst.iso', and, voila, the Debian installation page came up. So I'll wait a few days for the stable version. I (almost) couldn't have timed it better! I had assumed that, since Ubuntu came pre-installed on this machine, there wouldn't be issues with Debian, which I guess was a little naive. Thanks for saving me a bunch of time!
