Installing a server with ZFS and smb/cifs sharing. It replaces OpenIndiana/Solaris so I'm having to do things which I wouldn't do under OI.
I'm fairly sure that my problem is a lack of synchronising between PAM/SMB authorisation when I add a user and change password in the standard useradd/passwd commands.
I'm guessing that I've got to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf but I'm reading various internet pages which are giving me different instructions and I'm not finding things which I'm expecting to find.
samba and libpam-winbind are installed, so I'm assuming that maybe the latter has already made some changes for me?
However, on attempting a mount I'm getting permission denied, so I'm guessing there are still configuration files I need to change, but given the various different instructions on the internet, I'm not sure what.
Grateful for a pointer to a known, up to date instruction please.

Re: SMB user/password sync on Deb 12
As an addition, the username and password work during an smbclient -L and the ZFS share is visible in the available share list.
So I'm not totally sure, now, why I'm getting permission denied on an attempt to mount the published ZFS share.

I am also reading that under Debian, that turning on the samba share on ZFS isn't enough and that it must also be declared in the SMB.conf file... even though it's showing up in the published shares?
I'm starting to tie myself in knots here.

Re: SMB user/password sync on Deb 12
I think I've solved it. Apparently the ACL wasn't working and it needed a "standard" UGO type permission to be CHMODded to the directory.
At least I've moved forward somewhat, although there are still issues but I guess I'll get on top of those once I've worked out some more of the differences between Solaris/OpenIndiana and Debian.
HOWEVER - if there's a way to sync smbpasswd whenever a password is changed via passwd then I'd be grateful to find out how to do it please.
