[O/S] Won't close down can anyone please offer suggestions
[O/S] Won't close down can anyone please offer suggestions
I am fairly new to Debian and am having problems with my laptop not closing down.
Info:
Latest Debian 12.4
Gnome
HP envy i7 8th
Syptoms:
If I shut down my laptop then approximately 6 times out of 10 it doesn't. It hangs with a blank screen but with the light illuminated on my on off button on my laptop. If I then hold the on off button on my laptop for about 10 seconds it then closes down.
Any suggestions on how to please fix this. Many thanks for any help

I can't remember offhand if Gnome uses Plymouth by default. If you hit Esc during shutdown, do you see the shutdown messages? Normally you would see a message about what shutdown is waiting for, unless the plymouth shutdown animation is hiding it.
After rebooting from a freeze, is there anything in the journal concerning the shutdown? If the system froze before the journal was stopped, maybe not.

Code: Select all
# journalctl -b -1 -n 20

Many thanks for your reply.
Unfortunately/fortunately my laptop hasn't failed to shutdown properly for the last four times I tried?!?
I shall try a few more times and if it does fail then I shall try both esc and the journalctl thing and post back.
Many thanks again!

Happened again. Wouldn't shut down. The 'esc' key has no effect, all I can see is a blank screen.

Boot the system (perhaps you already have). Run the command Frank gave you. Post the output in your next reply using code tags. Notice you run the command as root. If not familiar, you do that by running su - in Terminal. The space between su and the hyphen is essential. At the prompt, enter root's password, which you should have set during installation. By the way, Frank, checking a Gnome VM, it does use Plymouth.

Alas, not enabled on this Forum. Instead, rmmon, you have to type in code tags manually. In fairness, I should have included that link originally, but didn't have it handy at the time.

It is enabled- something is preventing it working for you. Theme choice?

Okay, I get it. Not the icon I'm used to. In fact, I can't read it, only the tool tip (no themes, by the way). To be clear, rmmon, we're talking about the fifth button on the first line.

Many thanks everyone for your kind help. But I am beyond what I understand. I just cannot understand what I have to do to present a list to you.
I shall have to give in and accept failure and that my laptop doesn't close down properly sometimes and that my bluetooth doesn't work on my installation of Debian.
But as I say thank you so much everyone for your kind help. Best wishes.
