Debian 12.4 | No ethernet detected

#1 Post by Darko Dark Shadow »

Hello, I have recently installed Debian 12.4 on my laptop Acer Aspire 7 (A717-75G-700J), everything is working fine, even Wi-Fi, except for ethernet. Debian can't detect my ethernet hardware, I realized that during the installation (Netinst) because the network setup skipped to the Wi-Fi connection. After the setup I installed firmware-atheros, firmware-linux-nonfree and firmware-realtek.

I runned the following commands and this are the results:

Code: Select all

lspci |grep -i ethernet
This command shows nothing.

Also I have installed the r8168-dkms package but it didn't solve the problem.

If the Linux kernel cannot find the ethernet network card, there are good chances that it is disabled (for example, at BIOS/firmware configuration level) or your are double booting (with Windows) and you did not completely shutdown Windows (e.g.: fast boot is active) before booting into Debian.

I've checked in the BIOS but Secure Boot is disabled, and I only have Debian 12.4 installed, so there's no dual-boot. In the previous versions of Debian, like Debian 10 and 11, ethernet worked fine.

Can you try booting with secure boot enabled and check if the lspci command reports the ethernet network card ?

Can you report the output of the following command booting with and without secure boot enabled (the inxi program must be installed) ?

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
Can you try searching inside BIOS configuration about the ethernet network card and if it is enabled ?

That's quite strange: can you send photos of BIOS screens ?

I would try booting debian 11 live usb and debian 12 live usb. This should make it easy to figure out if this is a regression.

I have tried it but it remains the same, Debian setup's can't find the ethernet card, I tested it till Debian 10 but nothing, and about 2 or 3 years ago my ethernet card was recognized so now I think it's a hardware problem and I must open my laptop to find what's happening.

Simply boot older versions of live to find out when it broke? Note that older live media did not include non-free firmware.

If you have another spare running computer plug an ethernet cable from it into the laptop port, then boot the lap. It should pick up a hot connection on the card as you have network boot enabled in the BIOS. If it shows up then shut it down and disable network boot to see if card then shows up.

Unfortunately no, I tested my ethernet cable with another laptop and it works fine, then I opened my Acer laptop to clean it and check if something had become disconnected from the motherboard, but everything seems fine, besides I have no knowledge in electronics. For now I keep using Wi-Fi, so I think there's nothing more I can do about this.

Good you have an alternative. If you still would like to troubleshoot the ethernet problem, do you see lights at the cable port, when the cable is plugged?

Yes, everything works fine with the ethernet cable when I connect it beacuse I have tested it with another laptop. So the cable it's not the problem, for now I think it's a hardware problem but I find it strange beacuse I never hit or drop my Acer laptop.

I was thinking in updating the BIOS, but unfortunately Acer doesn't provides support for Linux as you can see in this page, this drivers, BIOS and firmwares are only for Windows 10 x64:

https://www.acer.com/ar-es/support/prod ... est=A717;0

Maybe I should ask in the Acer forum and if I found a solution I will post it here :D

I was thinking in updating the BIOS, but unfortunately Acer doesn't provides support for Linux as you can see in this page, this drivers, BIOS and firmwares are only for Windows 10 x64:

Maybe I should ask in the Acer forum and if I found a solution I will post it here :D
You don't need Linux support to update the BIOS, altough most of the fimwareupgrades are for windows, there might be some useful, Read the descriptions of firmware updates, if there is anything useful.

For example, I had to upgrade the BIOS of my PC, since before that it could not support Ryzen processors.
