Getting Counter-Strike 2 to work on Debian 12

#1 Post by sawyer22 »

While CS:GO worked without problems on my machine, Counter-Strike 2 does not work.

I have Debian 12 and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and nvidia-driver 525.

The game launches fine, but shortly later freezes. Also, sound does not work. Any advice on how to get this to work?

Could be. However, nvidia 535 is not available for Debian?

Currently experimental only.

Hello sawyer22,

We can use the website protondb, managed by steam, for the community to report how to get games working with linux.

This is the page for counter strike 2...

https://www.protondb.com/app/730

When you use protondb you want to be very careful, some people spread misinformation there...usually they recommend vsync which is nonsensical. (source: gaming for over a decade now...)

There are people reporting lots of problems with that game, and others reporting that it is working fine.

Here's some quotes that are useful... Many people say it doesnt work with wayland. That's typical...we want to use X11 as the display server for gaming anyways. Make sure you're using x11 as the display server...
Native version can be started and played straight after being downloaded, no tweaks necessary.

Online components work without any issues.
It's given the "native" status which means that is has native support for linux, but people are also reporting problems with it, since recent updates. We can also try playing the non-native client with wine-proton to get it to work....

Proton is mainly a customized wine package that steam makes... and the latest proton 9 (beta) based on wine 9 is very good.

You might also try using the latest nvidia driver from nvidia's website which will install and run on your machine without issues, but on bookworm can have some conflicts with debians packaging scheme. So if you get the latest 550 driver, you'll find apt complaining that you have packages that conflict with what it wants to use...

It's also reported on github updating the graphics driver fixes the problem..
Either the several patches released since yesterday, or the updated Nvidia driver fixed it for me as well.

Issue is fixed for me after upgrading to Nvidia driver 535

For Ubuntu:

sudo ubuntu-drivers install nvidia:535
Looks like this game has a lot of bad information surrounding it...it's going to take some testing to get the right settings/packages for good performance ; D

I had the same issues when CS-2 came out using Debian 12.04. I updated the sources list, which in turn upgraded the kernel updated from 6.1.0-13 to 6.6.13+bpo-amd64.

Code: Select all

$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
...and added the following:

Code: Select all

# backports
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports main
Save with, Ctrl o, enter, then Ctrl x.

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get update

$ sudo apt-cache search linux-image

$ sudo apt -t bookworm-backports upgrade
Restart PC. This updated Steam to the latest version.

All my games run on Steam without any issues now. Maybe worth a try.
Image Bookworm 6.6.13+bpo-amd64 Xfce - Intel i7 11700 - ASRock Z590 Pro 4 - Radeon RX 6700-XT

Packages from Debian Backports must be cherry-picked, e.g.

Code: Select all

#> apt -t bookworm-backports install linux-image-amd64

Thanks for the suggestion. I installed kernel 6.6.13 from backports, but when restarting, Debian cannot start lightdm anymore, so I guess there is some issue with the graphic driver. Any ideas what this could be?

I updated the kernel, but have got the same problem with the new kernel: as soon as I press "fire", the game freezes. Any more ideas?
