[Solved] all display managers lagging almost 2-3 minutes in new install of debian trixie 13

#1 Post by estatistics »

install on new sdd first debian 12 and then updating to debian 13 (trixie testing) , all display managers that i tried were lagging almost 2-3 minutes before actual desktop appears. this was not the case for debian 12.

namely i tried, gdm3 (least lag), xdm, lightdm, sddm, ly. . lightdm shows some errors about freedesktop.dbus and freedesktop.displaymanager but before i press "go".
All dm lag when i press "go", enter.

some journal

This looks more like a filesystem problem than a display manager problem. What makes you think it's a DM problem?
This might be useful to start with:

Code: Select all

$> cat /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

$> systemd-mount --list

Code: Select all

$> findmnt -o LABEL,TARGET,FSTYPE,SIZE,AVAIL,USED,USE%,SOURCE,VFS-OPTIONS,UUID --notruncate

Code: Select all

#> journalctl -b -g "mount|error|fail"

Thanks @estatistics

You forgot this one:

Code: Select all

$> findmnt -o LABEL,TARGET,FSTYPE,SIZE,AVAIL,USED,USE%,SOURCE,VFS-OPTIONS,UUID --notruncate
And this one must be run as root:

Code: Select all

#> journalctl -b -g "mount|gvfs|error|fail"
# means root, $ user
I added the keyword "gvfs", you can add any keyword you think is relevant.

There may be a problem with gvfs or other things. As a test, would it be possible for you to comment out the /dev/disk/by-label/Projects line in your fstab

Code: Select all

#/dev/disk/by-label/Projects /mnt/Projects ext4 nosuid,nodev,nofail,noauto,x-gvfs-show,x-udisks-auth,x-gvfs-name=Projects,x-gvfs-icon=Projects,x-gvfs-symbolic-icon=Projects 0 0
and see if booting returns to normal?

Then try to mount the partition manually and see if it's fast and without errors?

Code: Select all

#> mount -t ext4 /dev/disk/by-label/Projects /mnt/Projects
Then unmount it

Code: Select all

#> umount /mnt/Projects
and uncomment your fstab

Code: Select all

/dev/disk/by-label/Projects /mnt/Projects ext4 nosuid,nodev,nofail,noauto,x-gvfs-show,x-udisks-auth,x-gvfs-name=Projects,x-gvfs-icon=Projects,x-gvfs-symbolic-icon=Projects 0 0
and mount it using the fstab options

Code: Select all

#> mount /mnt/Projects
and note if it's that fast.

project disk is not mounted at boot/start.
I cant see how this can be related to display manager lag problem.

Until now, no clue why is this happening
my thoughts are about "sudoers", "user/file rights". "resolution", "searching for something or waiting for something"

any clue from here?

On a whim, as a test, just to see...
Install haveged, reboot, remove it if you think it did nothing, and report!

I tried haveged. Nothing changed.

I tried strace too. nothing useful produced from there. It seams to wait for something (pulling) for 2-3 minutes too.

UPDATE! Mystery solved! when i turned off my router, desktop appeared after reboot immediately. Now i must find why connman must wait so much for desktop graphical interface to appear.

Do you have network-manager AND connman installed? If so, you need to choose one or the other, as they conflict. Personally, I've never been happy with connman, and I don't think it's being actively developed any more. Also, it may be better to comment out the enp3s0 interface in /etc/network/interfaces and let the connection manager handle it.
If you just have an Ethernet connection, you don't even need a connection manager.
