As this is the latest 14th Gen Intel gen processor, it will likely need a more recent kernel. Try installing the current 6.5 kernel and headers from Backports.

I give up. I got 6.5.0 running and no difference. I plugged in a USB speaker and all is well. Maybe this board is not supported.

Your inxi shows:

Code: Select all

Device-1: Intel Alder Lake-S HD Audio vendor: Micro-Star MSI
    driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel alternate: snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl
I have vague recollection of a similar problem being solved by forcing the snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl driver.

May also need DSP to be turned on in the BIOS, and updated topology and UCM files.

firmware-sof-signed and alsa-ucm-conf can be manually installed from Sid I think.

I have the same "dummy" audio output. I am also running Debian 12 with gnome. I assume the problem has been there for a long time, but I only now added a speaker to this unit and so only now noticed it.

The processor is Xeon. I have the same processor and same manufacturer SB in another system that has great sound. On that unit the Built-in Audio works fine. Both units are running Debian 12.

root@vm-server:/home/mike# uname -r
6.1.0-20-amd64

I decided to install MATE to see if it was a gnome problem. And it was sort of as it allowed me to see that the audo hardware was disabled, but I still do not have audio,

In MATE I was able to use System/Preferences/Hardware/Sound to see that built in ProAudio was disable. SO I enabled it, but that didn't fix the output problem It still will not allow me to get audio.

This output is the same on both the units that does have sound and the one that does.

Code: Select all

root@vm-server:/home/mike# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC887-VD Analog [ALC887-VD Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
using "inxi -Fxxxmprz" produces an audio section that says:

Code: Select all

Audio:
Device-1: Intel C600/X79 series High Definition Audio driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel
    bus-ID: 00:1b.0 chip-ID: 8086:1d20 class-ID: 0403

  Server-1: PipeWire v: 0.3.65 status: n/a (root, process) with: 1: pipewire-pulse
status: active 2: wireplumber status: active 3: pipewire-alsa type: plugin
I gather that I an not the only person with this problem and I have seen no one saying the problem is solved.
