[Solved] Parole codec can't install

#1 Post by rayandrews »

"Parole needs meta/x-gst-fourcc-mebx"
"Unable to install missing codecs"
"No available plugin installer was found"

I found this:

viewtopic.php?t=154881

... but I don't follow the answer.

I had no problem with Debian 11, but I get that error with my brand new Debian 12.
I seem to have the needed packages:

Code: Select all

 /etc/apt 0 % aptitude search gstreamer1.0-plugins
i A gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad - GStreamer plugins from the "bad" set
p gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad-apps - GStreamer helper programs from the "bad" set
v gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad-faad -
v gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad-videoparsers -
i A gstreamer1.0-plugins-base - GStreamer plugins from the "base" set
p gstreamer1.0-plugins-base-apps - GStreamer helper programs from the "base" set
i A gstreamer1.0-plugins-good - GStreamer plugins from the "good" set
p gstreamer1.0-plugins-rtp - GStreamer elements from the "rtp" set
i A gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly - GStreamer plugins from the "ugly" set
v gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly-amr -
... so what's up?

Vague question. Is this message shown when you try to install parole or when trying to play some media?
I found this:

There is no answer to your question in that topic so nothing to follow.

Pardon, I hate being vague. When trying to play a video: xxx.mov. That other question seemed to have the same issue AFAICT, or close anyway.

BTW, I just installed the old mplayer and it plays the video fine.

Completely off topic, I just notice the up-thumb is 'thanks' ... sheesh, no wonder I've been such an ingrate -- didn't know that.

So it's probably an old video based on Apple Quicktime. You can find out exactly what codec it uses by installing mediainfo and do:

Code: Select all

mediainfo xxx.mov
BTW, I just installed the old mplayer and it plays the video fine.
No problem now then! :D I use MPV which plays just about anything and is based on mplayer IIRC. I think it uses libav rather than gstreamer. I never tried Parole which I believe is for Xfce desktop.

Code: Select all

2 /aMisc 0 % mediainfo easy-pulling-cord.mov
General
Complete name : easy-pulling-cord.mov
Format : MPEG-4
Format profile : QuickTime
Codec ID : qt 0000.00 (qt )
... right you are. And indeed it's sent from an Apple phone.

> No problem now then! :D I use MPV

Just gave that a try, seems fine. Still, culturally speaking it bugs me that there's all these players out there and some of them work and some don't and what once worked (Parole) is now busted and the attitude is 'oh well ...'
And this was from the latest-greatest Apple i-phone, so I dunno if you could call it 'old'.

I use xfce so you're probably right again. I'll mention this to those guys, since that would seem to be getting closer to the relevant dudes.
