M.2 PCIe 3.0 or 4.0?

M.2 PCIe 3.0 or 4.0?

Just wondering, I'm running Debian 12 on a SSD and as part of a PC upgrade the LGA 1700 motherboard I've chosen has the ability to run M.2 PCIe 4.0 drives. Has anyone managed to run Debian from such a drive or do I need to stick to a third Gen M.2 drive?

The interface is forward and backward compatible. It will negotiate to the speed of the oldest generation component in the connection. The operating system is not involved in the process.

When i changed motherboard I used clonezilla to clone myOSes from a Samsung 850 ssd disk to a Samsung 980 pro (pcie M2 4.0). No issues at all

I'm afraid my friend it does. Regardless of forward and backward compatible (that's to do with hardware) ,with 4th Gen M.2 drive, Debian would just not install on this 4.0 version.

A mate of mine and I found around eighteen months ago that Debian or Debian based distros wouldn't install on a Gen 4.0 M.2 drive. The installer could see it but refused to use the drive. Whether or not this was to do with make or software interface of the drive, we don't know and regardless of how many times we formatted this drive, the installer would not use it. We tried another M.2, a Seagate Firecuda 4.0, formatted it and got the same issue, yet we found Windoz 10 installed with no issues on these drives and booted, so they weren't faulty. In the end we found using a older Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500 GB M.2 Gen 3.0 there was no problem with the installer.

Obviously now as @ttila has said the issue is no longer there.

I am currently posting this from a Debian 12 installation running on a PCIe 4.0 M.2 drive.

I installed Bookworm several days ago on a M.2 PCIE 4.0 Sabrent, no issues at all. You do need to look at the motherboard manual and note which M.2 slots are 'bootable'. As well, the manufacturer site will have a list of known working components for your board, always good to check that as well.
