Re: Debian's Community on discord is back
While Debian celebrates Linux and communities, especially Debian Communities, the Discord link given is not an official Debian resource nor administered by Debian.
Typo perfectionish.

I can't help but to feel that Mumble would be much more appropriate for a Debian community. Never would I use proprietary software to discuss Debian.

If we can call it "software", hehUptorn wrote: 2024-04-23 00:24 I can't help but to feel that Mumble would be much more appropriate for a Debian community. Never would I use proprietary software to discuss Debian.
Nothing more but (yet another) heavy-weight ugly Electron one-service client that's bricked once their server is inaccessible. Putting aside what kind of "people" reside there
Oy, I need a drink!

You are right, I'm pretty sure if someone from Debian team joined it would be very easy to give privileges.Augie77 wrote: 2024-04-22 21:38 Wants me to join before I see the contents...I backed out. Never was that fond of Discord type forums anyway.

Wouldn't agree more. Sadly Element (matrjxt.org) failed to bring new people in. The bridges between irc was golden.Uptorn wrote: 2024-04-23 00:24 I can't help but to feel that Mumble would be much more appropriate for a Debian community. Never would I use proprietary software to discuss Debian.

Sounds interesting. Do you know of anyone running a Debian discussion on Mumble?Uptorn wrote: 2024-04-23 00:24 I can't help but to feel that Mumble would be much more appropriate for a Debian community. Never would I use proprietary software to discuss Debian.
The Discord channel doesn't seem to work anyway.

Re: Debian's Community on discord is back
1* I just discovered that there's a Debian discord channel. Cool I guess, but does anyone really care?
2* Mumble might be a better solution, but:
3* What, in the name of all that is holy, is wrong with IRC anyway?

Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. Four times is Official GNOME Policy.

IRC is like HTTP, it is just a building block. To really.compare discord to IRC you would need to define the network, channel and client applications used in the comparison. For example, if I join the pikvm discord I can see messages that were sent before I joined the discord or when I was offline, quite a major advantage.

Re: Debian's Community on discord is back
I happen to be the owner of the new server. We definitely have been back for some time and do have a few actual developers in it, but I would like to say that we're also an unofficial venue and you should consult the IRC or Matrix communities if you want official communication with developers.

Thank you! I'm glad to be here. I've lurked on and off this community for many years, although without a registered account.

Re: Debian's Community on discord is back
I tried to use discord, I join to Debian channel/group/community (I'm not sure the name in discord) and TBH I couldn't adapt to the amount of information running there.

Yeah, I'm a generation or two older than the average discord user and it's been quite the adventure just observing. I have been able to answer a couple of technical questions and for me it's been quite the social experiment just watchingeamanu wrote: 2025-01-19 17:53I tried to use discord, I join to Debian channel/group/community (I'm not sure the name in discord) and TBH I couldn't adapt to the amount of information running there.

Welcome to the merging of what would normally be a culture clash! Except we are doing it right. Discord moves a lot faster over many topics and while it seems random most of the topic of the moment is user directed. Lots of just random chatters, hardcore hobbyists, and professionals there. Even though that instance is Debian specific there are a lot of Arch and other distros represented there, so you get a better feel for the overall FLOSS community.wizard10000 wrote: 2025-01-19 18:19Yeah, I'm a generation or two older than the average discord user and it's been quite the adventure just observing. Observe and pop in on occasion they don't bite, and the admin staff reacts very quickly.
Generationally it can be a bit overwhelming if you are used to the more stoic specific chatting Debian has, I.E. Mailing-lists, IRC, and these forums in some regard, if you are a bit older in the highlight of chatting like AOL, Compuserve or younger in the Discord commnunities it would be an easier transition/understanding of large scale chatting groups. Slack doesn't count.

I have a hard time with any communication that is faster than a horse. I'd ask the courier to relax and have some tea, allow the horse to graze and rest. I'll fashion a response, not to journey until dawn.
