[Testing - Trixie] apt dist-upgrade wants to remove half of my system

#1 Post by PsychoHermit »

Be careful, I don't know what's going on but apt dist-upgrade wants to remove Gnome and Nautilus and a bunch of other stuff. I will wait and see if it gets corrected before doing any upgrading.

Just saying be careful out there!

yea was a bit trying earlier today for me doing apt full-upgrade with Trixie
NOT sure why ol Gnome was removed but I went ahead and done it anyways.
Came back with black screen but asking for login. Logged in as root.
Had to do an dpkg --configue -a
and an apt --fix-broken install
network was good so an apt install gnome
all back to ok :-)

Same for my Trixie, it is due of the unmeet dependencies of all "t64" newer libraries, in my case. While all packages will be update it is safe use "upgrade" instead of "dist-upgrade".

There seems to be a package update car crash in Testing at the moment. I would take @ttilla's excellent advice and hold off on removing anything for a few days until the dependency issues are resolved. Thanks mrjcd for the advice on what to do if wanted packages are removed.

It is “urgent to wait”, as fabien put it:
fabien wrote: 2024-04-26 20:40 Things are constantly moving in testing. It is often “urgent to wait”, sometimes a few days, for the matter to be resolved.

It looks like the issue is resolved, apt dist-upgrade looks sane again.

So it's general, thank you. It's just a question of patience then.

Quick update on Cinnamon disappearing the cinnamon-l10n package is 6.0.2-2 and the remainder is 5.8.4-4 so when upgrade it must wipe out the rest.

Blindly ran apt full-upgrade and had an exciting morning. :)

I recovered my setup by installing the gnome package again, but now gdm doesn't display anything at all until I change to a different virtual terminal and back. I found some forum posts complaining about this with nvidia hardware (which I am using) years ago, but nothing recent. Anybody else?

I wish they would get the train wreck that dist-upgrade is right now fixed. It wants to remove gnome, and evolution just to name a few. I guess I could go ahead to do dist-upgrade and reinstall what it removes, but that sounds like a pain in the butt.

Went ahead and did the dist-upgrade, all I had to install was gnome and evolution, so that wasn't so bad.
