Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
Ubuntu 24.04, Gnome 46 with Wayland session.
As you can see from the picture provided, my machine is neither new nor powerful, but everything works very fast on it. Apparently, the developers of Ubuntu did a very good job, because the system is very fast and responsive. I don't want to cause any emotions, but it works SIGNIFICANTLY faster than Debian 12 (I had the same machine, with the same configuration. I installed Debian 12 with Gnome in it).

Wow..that's a strong statement. Care to back that up with some stats? I am not questioning you - just curious to see some performance benchmarks Ubuntu 24.04 vs Debian 12, if you have them. I tried Ubuntu 24.04 in a Virtualbox and once I started Firefox, performance was as bad as any other distro. But no, I didn't really gather any stats.None1975 wrote: ↑2024-04-29 11:39 Ubuntu 24.04, Gnome 46 with Wayland session.

Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
The only reason i have installed Mint, not Debian, on wife's laptop is that i thought Mint to be more "mainstream". And that with more mainstream distro you will be possible to find more easily the needed information or software, from PPA, for example, or proprietary drivers. But now i think that Debian is completely fine for begginers also.pbear wrote: ↑2024-04-29 02:09Sorry, guess I wasn't clear. What I'm suggesting is that LMDE probably has whatever features caused you to install Mint on your wife's computer. Then, having both of you on the same code base would simplify your job as system administrator. Switching both of you to LMDE would be an option, of course, but I assume you are running Debian because you prefer a desktop not supported by Mint.

Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
It's true, Ubuntu (and therefore Mint main edition) has more apps than Debian (or LMDE). It's also more likely to run into regressions during update. That's the main trade-off between the two branches. Anyhoo, if Mint main edition is working for your wife, no reason to change. Switching her to LMDE was merely a suggestion, something to consider. Don't agree Debian is "completely fine" for beginners, by the way, but that's way off topic to this thread.

In previous versions (22.04) firefox (as snap package) worked slowly. And in this version of Ubuntu, the snap version works even faster than the one installed with the deb package.my2we9dy wrote: ↑2024-04-29 13:57

I did all the measurements by eye. I did not use any special measuring tools. This is my subjective observation. But the sense of speed is very clearly felt. And considering that the system is installed on an old HDD (not SDD), this is especially fascinating to me. By the way, my system is ten years old….
I think the Ubuntu kernel team has brought some optimizations to the Linux kernel...Optimization and design (especially regarding fonts) is felt at every step....

Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
I think this is a credit to the Ubuntu kernel team. As for Gnome itself, Ubuntu's command has also contributed to its optimization. The fact is one - even at the highest loads, with an old HDD, the system just flies, without any hangs. What I could not say about Debian 12, although the system works well in it too....but I will repeat. I was very surprised by the performance of the system. Didn't expect that.

Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
Does the new buntu use Firefox 125? When upgrading from an older version it shows a splash screen - https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/125.0.1/whatsnew/
Comments at - Why is Firefox 125 25% faster?
So if you are judging the OS speed by the speed of the browser, you are using unscientific method. It has nothing to do with ubuntu, but rather is down to the Firefox developers.

Thanks @sunrat for the clue. I went ahead and tried it and yes, it does seem new Firefox seems to be faster. I created a new post here.sunrat wrote: ↑2024-04-29 22:03 Does the new buntu use Firefox 125? Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
Sorry, overlooked this.
Perhaps it's a language issue, but you've managed to miss my point completely. Even after I went to the trouble of clarifying it in the post you quote. The context of my suggestion was a household where one computer is using Debian and the other Mint regular edition. Anyhoo, if you prefer straight Debian over LMDE, that's what you should use. I dual boot them. They're very similar, except LMDE has better icons and an update manager I don't use.

Not I...I have no use for that pile of ... [insert explative]
Last time I checked, Canonical was still a bad actor with regard to unsolicited phone-home code embedded in their releases. At least every time I've installed it on a machine here, I started seeing suspicious outgoing traffic in my firewall logs, with no way to disable.

Personally, I have not written anywhere that I judge the speed of Ubuntu by how fast Firefox starts. I wrote that when copying large files (4Gb and more) and sending large files (8Gb and more) over torrent at the same time, the Ubuntu system works quickly without any hangs. What can't be said about Debian 12. And you don't need to use any specialized software to see it.

Yes, I agree. Version 22.04 was no good. Something was constantly breaking, there were reports of breakages. But this latest version doesn't have all this. Works very stable and fast. And that surprised me very pleasantly.kent_dorfman766 wrote: ↑2024-04-30 04:35 Last time I checked, Canonical was still a bad actor with regard to unsolicited phone-home code embedded in their releases. Which really has nothing to do with it being spyware. It's just now "well written" spyware.None1975 wrote: ↑2024-04-30 11:16Yes, I agree. Version 22.04 was no good. There's no great mystery. Like pretty much everyone in this business, Ubuntu has a privacy policy.

Not gonna bother since most of the 2024 herd isn't as concerned as they should be. The "evidence" is clear to anyone who knows how to use wireshark or a pcap ethernet sniffer to watch all the unsolicited connections with canonnical, regardless of what they end user attempts to disable. Cannonical is "no good" for true personal security and privacy.None1975 wrote: ↑2024-05-02 15:40Hello.kent_dorfman766 wrote: ↑2024-05-02 14:12 Which really has nothing to do with it being spyware. Re: [Off-Topic] So who here is looking forward to Ubuntu's 24.04 LTS next week
Not quite. The issue is control (rather than risk). Ubuntu is doing something Mr D can't figure out how to stop, so he would rather not use it at all.
