HELP again please. In late May and onward, when performing an update, I keep getting a warning as shown below :
sudo apt update

Hit:2 http://deb.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security InRelease

The update takes an age waiting for headers. Linux Headers are not installed, and as far as I cn tell there is no such thing for Skype. Perhaps installing Linux headers will fix the issue but I ask for guidance on this.
And Skype for Linux does not work. I have applied all the fixes advised by Fabien shown in the foregoing, both before and after a delete/re-install of SkypefL, but to no avail. I have searched the web for a solution but I found nothing to help.
So I once again I have no Skype.
Can anyone help, please? Tom.

504 Gateway Time-out is a problem on their server. Probably nothing you can do about it but wait. Also nothing to do with Linux headers.

Apparently the idiots at Microsoft have no clue on running a repository and have allowed the server to be broken for well over a week now. Comment out the damn thing in the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list file however you have named it. What it looks like on the # is put at the start of the line to disable the checking of it.

Code: Select all

root@9600k:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list
#deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main
The skype program itself should still work with the version installed or at least it starts up here without any problems.

Hello Tom!

They have decided to discontinue their repository.

Have you tried their web service? This would be the simplest solution. Does this suit your needs?

If not, you can still download the deb package (archive it in case it is no longer available in the future). The version is currently 8.109.0.209.

To install it (let's say you downloaded the package in /tmp/skypeforlinux-64.deb):

Code: Select all

#> apt install /tmp/skypeforlinux-64.deb
But this procedure probably won't work for future versions.

Gentlemen, many thanks for your inputs to my issue. Here are a few comments in response :
Sunrat – it seems that waiting will not result in a solution because MS decided to discontinue the repository and require users to install with Snap packages (see link above in the reply by Fabien),
Redgreen925 – the file that you cited was commented out some time ago, so this was not a solution for me,
Fabien – great to get your help again. The point about getting the deb package again was I assume completed when I un-installed then re-installed the whole SfL application. So it seems that this method will not work for me.
I have looked at the Skype for Web (SfW) service on various web sites, and it does appear that this will be a good way to go for me. However, SfW has been developed for Chrome browsers and I have used Firefox exclusively for some years. Now in 2024 apparently MS have made a system for FF, but I have not yet found how to get to it; MS seem to want me to enable Javascript.
If I cannot get SfW on FF, then I may be able to get it by installing the Brave browser (as it is Chrome-based.)
I shall continue to look for the FF solution, and report here later.
Gentlemen, many thanks indeed for your contributions, Tom.

Gentlemen, many thanks indeed for your contributions, Tom.
It tells you that it has limited functionality on the Firefox but the camera and microphone worked on a test call here easily enough. Only had to allow the Javascrript for the two skype domains that noscript had disabled and it fired right up.

I set up Skype for Web (SfW) on my laptop, running Firefox, and as RedGreen925 reported things do seem to work. So I shall abandon the Skype app and use the online version.
In the interim between my last and this post I have lost my only important Skype social contact, so my future needs are likely to be for occasional contacts as necessary with tax offices, banks, etc, that do arise sometimes. So SfW should be quite satisfactory. The only concern for me is whether or not my funds will be transferred and available for me to use in SfW to pay for calls to landlines; I have not figured this out as yet.
I guess that now I can delete the Skype app on my laptop and so avoid the annoying delays when updating.
So once again with your generous help, it seems that my problem is solved. Very many thanks to you all. Tom.

No need to delete keep it with the repository disabled in the sources.list then the delay is gone as it will not be checked to cause it. Eventually the libraries required by the .deb.version will possibly be updated and it could stop working but that is not guaranteed to happen.

Code: Select all

root@9600k:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list
#deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main

This way it will never be checked and the software still works for now.

RedGreen925, in fact the line of code that you cited was already commented out. So I also commented out the only other line of code in that folder, i.e. the one that identified the Skype key. After this, my update proceeds without problems. I shall retain the skype-stable.list file as you suggest in case Microsoft reverts its support.
Many thanks once again, Tom.
