Will Debian 12 run smoothly on a i3 processor?

#1 Post by DebianMan »

Hi,

My current system that I run the latest version of Debian 12 is:

Code: Select all

CPU: quad core Intel Core i7-3770 (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 1825/1600/3900 MHz
Kernel: 6.1.0-21-amd64 x86_64 Up: 2d 13h 30m Mem: 7142.5/15783.2 MiB (45.3%)
Storage: 1.82 TiB (66.8% used) Procs: 286 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.26
Everything runs very smooth on this system. My question is will a i3-6100T 3.20 GHz 8 GB DDR3 mini computer run Debian 12 smoothly. I'm thinking of downgrading from my current i7 computer to save space and electricity but I've never used a computer with a i3 processor.

I mainly use my computer just for libreoffice, web browsing, and videos (media player) occasionally. What percentage of the above i3 processor would be used to handle these tasks? For my i7 computer it rarely goes aboves 10% of the the computer usage.

I am runing debian 12 kde plasma om a old asus pc with I3-4130 3.40 GHz and 8GB DDR3 without any problems. Never looked at the percentages of processor use.

Should run fine, maybe not as snappy as an I5 or I7 but should be ok.
I would suggest at least 8 gigs of ram though. And an SSD drive for best performance.
Good Luck and enjoy!

Thank you both for the feedback. I have no experience with i3 processors so I wasn't sure how it performs. If it runs Debian 12 KDE fine then it should work for my Debian 12 Xfce set up. I just ordered the above i3 computer off of Ebay for $39.99 and it has 8 GB ram but sometimes I go over that a little so I will most likely have to upgrade to 16 GB ram.

If the usage is limited to Browsing, LibreOffice and Video playback then Intel i3 7th Gen plus 8 GB RAM will be fine. It will not be fast, but will get work done.
A lot will depend on the type of storage media that you have. If you do not have SSDs then system will struggle.
A lot will also depend on what Desktop environment you choose, GNOME or KDE or MATE. If you choose a light weight option like XFCE/LXDE/IceWM then you should be fine. But do note that there is not much eye candy and effects in XFCE/LXDE/IceWM.

Suggestion would be upgrade RAM and shift to SSD if possible.

This is the kind of question I would expect to see from somebody considering running a 15+ year old processor, or some ultra low power SBC. Or somebody considering some really niche CPU architecture.

The different SKUs of consumer x86 processors are literally cut from the same silicon, just that the lower SKUs (i5, i3) have a prescribed number of cores fused off. And the ~300Mhz +/- ~500Mhz baseclock isn't going to make much of a difference when your chip is already running billions of cycles per second.

What I'm trying to say is that you don't need to worry about whether or not Linux will run smoothly. You would need to be running something seriously old or seriously underpowered.
