xfce4-screensaver missing

#1 Post by ape_din »

While installing the XFCE desktop environment, I noticed that xfce4-screensaver is missing. It also doesn't seem to be available in the official repositories. Am I missing something or is there an alternative package I should be using?

I can't speak to alternatives since I don't use any.
You can track the progress here;

I looked into the history of the package and was wondering what you all have been using this whole time.

Since xfce4-screensaver is the default in XFCE, I don't understand why it hasn't been in the stable release all these years :D

I believe screen blanking is handled by light-locker in Debian XFCE. Power Manager > Display settings work OK for me anyway. (The Blank/Put to sleep/Switch off options apply to CRT - for flat screens just use Switch off.)

Xscreensaver is available in the repository if you want the animations instead of/before screen blank. I think xfce4-screensaver was just a fork of that.

The author moans about installation of Xscreensaver with DEs here:

https://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/man1.html

Nothing specific about XFCE, but you may have to disable/remove light-locker to get it working.

If you just want screen blanking, XFCE will handle that.
