forgot password

#1 Post by EthnFlare »

Hi everyone. I'm using version 9.13 and forgot my password. Is there a way to reset it, or would it be easier to reinstall the system?

If you can boot installation media in rescue mode you can chroot into the installed system, then run passwd to change it.

No, the disk isn't encrypted. Does that make it easier to reset the password?"

Does it need to be a copy of my system, or just a system loaded onto the media? Am I right in thinking that the version on the installation media needs to match the one currently installed on my device?

You can do it just by editing GRUB and follow this guide:
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Linux_Gui ... t_password
“ computer users can be divided into 2 categories:
Those who have lost data
...and those who have not lost data YET ”
Remember to BACKUP!

It shouldn't matter. Whatever Linux you can boot should do, as long as it supports all your hardware. I'd try to avoid something a decade or more old.

Not IME.
