[Solved] System not updated to 12.7

#1 Post by Biomorph »

I have problems installing some new packages. When comparing this system to a fully working system I discovered that my system does not appear to have updated to Bookworm 12.7. Here is debian_version

Code: Select all

charles@Charles-MacBook:~$ cat /etc/debian_version
12.6
charles@Charles-MacBook:~$
Base-files is stuck at 12.6:

Code: Select all

 charles@Charles-MacBook:~$ apt policy base-files
base-files:
  Installed: 12.4+deb12u6
  Candidate: 12.4+deb12u6
  Version table:
 *** 12.4+deb12u6 500
        500 http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian bookworm/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
charles@Charles-MacBook:~$
I have done an apt update, but this still shows base-files at 12.6

Here is my sources.list and I have no other sources.list entries

Code: Select all

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.0.0 _Bookworm_ - Official amd64 NETINST with firmware 20230610-10:21]/ bookworm main non-free-firmware

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free

# bookworm-updates, to get updates before a point release is made;
# see https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html#_updates_and_backports
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-updates main contrib non-free

# This system was installed using small removable media
# (e.g. netinst, live or single CD). The matching "deb cdrom"
# entries were disabled at the end of the installation process.
# For information about how to configure apt package sources,
# see the sources.list(5) manual.

Strangely apt policy shows some 12.7 entries:

Code: Select all

Pinned packages:

I have compared this system with another system that is quite happily running 12.7 and cannot see any differences. I've done an apt clean and an apt autoclean, but I'm still in this situation.

I have no idea how this could possibly have happened and need help!

Try

Code: Select all

apt full-upgrade

There was another topic recently with similar issue which IIRC was solved by deleting the apt package list files and then update/upgrade. Sorry don't have time to search for it now.

Thanks @sunrat and @CwF
It had to be something to do with what was kept in the cache, so deleting /var/lib/apt/lists did the job for me.

I've been using Debian for many years now. I've always been impressed by how solid apt and dpkg is. The last post I had to do in this forum was about updating from Lenny to Squeeze. That same machine is now running Bookworm having been upgraded over the years.

This is the first time I've had a problem I couldn't sort out myself, but coming here got it sorted straight away.

Thanks everybody.

Great you got it sorted! It's strange as there have only been a couple of reports of this issue, and the vast majority had smooth upgrades including myself. Difficult to track down the cause with such a small sample size.

Please mark the topic solved by editing your first post to add prefix [Solved] to the title so it may help others.

Alas, the highlighting did not trigger anything :)

yep, genii pigs are in short supply! genii's not right, mice maybe...
This reminds me of 'reinstall' wisdom that is a shortcut to bewilderment!

That's a good run!

On this subject, what package tools are in use, just CLI apt ?

Just CLI apt. I did mess with aptitude for a while, but have stuck with apt for years now.

Thanks for that feedback, I guess it's not 'other' software.

Same behavior as noticed by Biomorph.
Removing /var/lib/apt/lists followed by an apt update && apt upgrade resolved this issue.

Nothing special in /etc/apt/ folder

My system was upgraded from bullseye some time ago,
but I'm nearly sure that output of cat /etc/debian_version
was 12.7 some weeks ago.

I ran into the same problem a while back - 12.6 not updating to 12.7 on one system. No issue on a second system. The suggested fix worked for me. Now I am seeing the issue repeat, this time it's 12.7 not updating to 12.8, on BOTH systems. The fix worked (again). Very strange.
