[Solved] Protonmail and Debian

#1 Post by mumpkie »

With respect I am not trying to start a flame war regarding my question. I love the integrity and philosophy which Debian brings to the computing world and that is why I am here. I am at a stage where I must decide which direction to go and seek everyone's input.

On my previous operating system, Linux Mint, for the past three years Protonmail, Protonvpn, ProtonCalendar, were installed and were also installed on my iPhone and worked very well. I ran Linux Mint for three years and few days ago switched to Debian 12. I will stay with Debian but what to do with ProtonMail and it's other apps? Knowing Debian is "free software" I am struggling deciding to install or not install and go with Evolution. If I install then the principles Debian stands for ,,I violated that and now it's another OS like Linux Mint.

Please in all sincerity,,,what would YOU do? I did a search prior to posting this on the debian forum but found nothing regarding my question.

I think you need to do what works for you. I use protonmail here use the web version so it's never really installed but find it to be a safe and secure e-mail client. Have also used Electron mail to access proton. I use the appimage version so it really not installed either both work well on Debian 12.

But it has to be your choice. So you are comfortable with it.

Well then, maybe I should have stayed with Linux Mint.

There is a LMDE version of Mint that you can install to get the base of Debian with the Mint dressing.

I was a long time Mint user, still use it some. Reason I switched to Debian was because it has KDE/plasma and mint not longer supports that DE. The Free software movement is great until your hardware will not work and you will need propitiatory drivers. Which Debian now provides. So your concern is not without validity but in real life you have to use what will work for you. Protonmail works fine in Debian. Mostly enjoy your journey with Linux. What ever you choose.

I switched for two reasons from Mint to Debian. Like you running Mint was limited to the Cinnamon DE. I wanted to experience other environments and for this debian chose GNOME. Secondly I wanted to go right to the "source" instead of running a derivative. I was reluctant for the last couple of years when visiting the mirror sites with the iso's and checksums and it was all so confusing due to the lack of steps explaining the how's and why's. After visiting other sites, non debian related, found sites with graphics which greatly helped to take the plunge. It's not hard but looks intimidating.

If debian did not have the propitiatory drivers I would not be up and running now let alone months but I can see the experienced and traditional debian users see their greatly loved OS being dumbed down if one would call it that.

Thanks for the reply.

Debian is "free software", yes. And that should not preclude you from installing Proton services software. Debian's philosophy is not exclusionist and nor is it prohibitionistic .

Debian has had repositories containing non-free device drivers for a very long time. Please don't confuse device drivers with firmware. The only recent change is the inclusion of some non-free firmware in the installation media, via it's own new non-free-firmware repository.
