[Discussion] Software that you wish were in the Debian repositories

#1 Post by Uptorn »

Is there any software that you wish were packaged in Debian? Anything that once was but is no longer available?

I do have it working on a i686 12.7, kind of... I don't know enough to fix it completely...

It would be nice if the repo versions of gnutv and handbrake actually worked.

For me it's
  • uMatrix ( webext-umatrix-firefox ) - the loss of development on uMatrix upstream is mourned. We are going on almost four years since the last update :(
  • Tagaini Jisho ( tagainijisho ) - I've had to build it from source since I use it almost daily.
  • Mullvad Browser ( and other FF derivatives ) - Would be a nice option to have instead of meticulously sanitizing Firefox-ESR at the user.js
  • YaCy - YaCy search had supposedly at one time been packaged in Debian but today requires a 3rd party repo or manual installation.
  • Xonotic - Would be good to replace Nexuiz which is AFAIK a dead project.
  • Pauker ( pauker ) - Not a huge loss, though.
As you can see, there is a lot of stuff from around the time of Jessie and Stretch, which is when I started using Debian.

qjournalctl. Graphical journal viewer/searcher - I steal it from MX repos because that's the only place I've found it packaged as a .deb

A piece of abandon ware
https://sourceforge.net/projects/easymp3gain/
Ideally there would be a KDE/qt version

I replaced it with an alias - but this one adds a 2db boost because my car plays mp3s about 2db lower than radio broadcasts.

Code: Select all

alias normalize='find . -name "*.mp3" -print0 | xargs -0 -n 1 -P 4 mp3gain -r -s r -d 2.0'
we see things not as they are, but as we are.

Thanks for the replies
The last time I tried Amarok it would freeze for long periods
I remember struggling with building smart playlists, got bored went back to the fork Clementine/Strawberry
Will Amarok let me adjust levels on flash drives not just the entire library?

Thanks for the code, but it's over my head [skill level], hence the need for a GUI

I found this

I never could get it to work

The Perl bindings for programming QT. Programming Gtk3 works like a charm, "batteries included" in every bookworm installation, but I'd like to learm programming with QT as well. Learning the Python language to do so is by far no choice for me.

I sometimes use fre:ac (https://www.freac.org/), I don't think it is in the repos.

You can also get easygain from the MX repo. Triple your money back if not happy with it.

I'd really like to see the net-tools package be reinstated as I'm used to using utilities such as ifconfig, dig and others.

You probably already know, but dig is currently packaged with dnsutils.

I have found Strawberry to be the best replacement for Amarok and it does have stable development. Funnily enough, I wasn't into Clementine back in the day when it was being developed.

I keep seeing that Clementine isn't being developed
Which is because it's done, mature, just bug & security updates...
Strawberry is very similar, I can't think of a feature it has that Clem doesn't
When I was on Manjaro, Clem was on aur & might be broken for a few days if I updated right when they came out instead of waiting a few days, so I used Strawberry which was in the repository
Here on Debian, Clem is in the repo...

In order to be able to use any player, I set up my files to use the comment field for rating as it is included in the meta data, unlike rating, same for playlists
Group is handy too, but isn't respected by the meta data editor I use Easytag

I tried to like Strawberry, but I couldn't. Amarok is coming back, though:

Amarok was my favourite and I hope it comes back strong. Now I mainly use DeadBeef which isn't in the repo but installs easily from .deb file from their site, or MX also maintain it in MX repo.
Cantata is an excellent MPD frontend with database and smart playlists like Amarok, and is in the repo. For single file plays, MPV.

So software I wish was in the repo - DeadBeef.

Which reminds me of taskcoach. These days I just notate everything to a plain text file.
